How was this movie not nominated for an Oscar?

The nominees that year:

Picture: "Awakenings," "Dances With Wolves," "Ghost," "The Godfather Part III," "GoodFellas."

3 of them I understand, but "Ghost" and "Godfather III"????

Maybe it was considered too Jewish... if that's possible with the Academy.I think that it was basically seen as Barry Levinson's homage to his relatives (and those like them) who came from Europe to follow the American dream. It did ~$15 million box office, which for a big director and loaded cast, was pretty much a dud. It ranked #76 in ticket sales that year.
It still got nominated for 4 Oscars, including Barry for Best Original Screenplay. That was their nod of appreciation.
