Automatic Headlights on Vehicle

I have a 2008 Ford Expedition that I can switch on the auto-headlights. I've run them on this setting since purchase (brand new) and it's run fine. However, the past 2 days I've noticed that the lights are on at noon in Austin with no clouds in sight.

Now, my vehicle stays pretty dirty and it is right now for sure. But, I'm not savvy as to if there is an indicator somewhere that triggers these lights and maybe it's covered in dirt (hence, thinks it's dark out). Can anyone provide a little info? Or does anyone know why this might be occuring?

Thanks.

The ambient light sensor on a lot of vehicles is in the center of the dash close to the windshield, dunno about yours. Owners manual should tell you where it is. Maybe something is lying on top of it? Doubt if being dirty would hurt, my dash has been dusted maybe twice in nine years and it works fine. But anything electronic can fail, so if it's uncovered and clean, I suppose a mechanic would be next.

Maybe the Ford system isn't this way, but you can't imagine how complicated and expensive some cars headlight systems are now. Self leveling motors controlled by one computer, high intensity bulbs (one high beam bulb list price on a Lexus IS 300-$350) with a ballast that includes a printed circuit in each bulb (headlight control ballast from Lexus-over $1000), headlight assembly, Lexus $1400. Don't get me started. Relays, timers, switches, sensors, oh yeah. Wiring diagram looks like the phone book.
Maybe yours will be something simple.

The light sensor on my Toyota is on the left hand side of that dash. Right where you put your registration and inspection stickers. My lights will turn on midday if it's cloudy.
