Doing our annual pilgrimage to Austin for Halloween weekend and need some restaurant recos. Vince Young's worth it or should we try another steakhouse. Also, need help chosing a BBQ place. Any help would be appreciated. Hook Em

Austin Land and Cattle.

Hit Manns for BBQ. May want to call ahead and let them know you are coming with a big group.

If you don't mind waiting an hour, go to Franklin BBQ at 10am, wait in line with 100 or so others for it to open at 11am, then enjoy the best brisket you have ever or will ever have.

Agree on Salt Lick. Yes, it's not the best BBQ available, butit's good, and it's all you can eat. Plus, it would be a good place for 30 people. Mick -- you have to bring your own beer, so don't forget that part. It gets crowded, so call ahead and se eif they can set you up for a large group.

County Line ain't that bad. Their ribs are dy-no-mite. Salt Lick definitely for a large group. Heck, even Rudy's for a large group. I'm sure they can accomodate. Haven't tried Vince Young's Steakhouse but all the commercials on the radio say it's been rated the "#1 athlete restaurant" for what it's worth. I don't know if that means they think Vince is the #1 athlete or that of all athlete owned restaurants, it's #1. Probably the latter.

With the exception of the sauce, the food at County Line and Salt Lick is virtually identical, including the high-end pricing. I enjoy the food at both, regardless of whether others consider it "real Texas BBQ" or not. If you want the experience of getting out in the country with your cooler full of beer and sitting in a relatively rustic setting, then you'll prefer Salt Lick over County Line.

That said, I'll take a BBQ trip to Lockhart or Lulling over Salt Lick or County Line any day of the week.
