Austin neighborhoods

I realize this is a reoccuring thread, but I have a more specific question.

I am not sure if I am moving to Austin yet, and I do NOT need a realtor, but I do want a layman's opinion: If I were working in NW Austin off Mopac south of 2222, and my wife were going to be working in one of the northern suburbs, are there any neighborhoods in that general area where I can get a 50s-60s ranch-style home in good condition for around $150-175k? I'd also prefer one with good schools if possible.

I hope that's not a tall order - let me know. Thanks, y'all.

That's hardly northwest Austin - more like west-southwest.

And that's pretty close to Westlake, which means houses are probably gonna be on the upper end of that price range, if not out of it altogether.

I don't know what parallel universe wherzwaldo is living in. Regardless, I don't think you'll be finding what you want in that area. I'd be thinking $140/sf, minimum, which probably translates to $200K and up.

I think you need to be looking farther out towards Cedar Park for housing in the price range you want. The houses will be newer, though, and their quality may or may not be suspect. Good luck.

That's northwest austin.

Just because it's south of 183 and like 500,000 people live in Round Rock now doesn't move the borders of Austin.
And it's nowhere near Westlake. Relatively speaking.

You can probably find the type of house you're looking for in that area, probaly east of MoPac but maybe around Balcones. I'm not too familiar with the area, being a southside boy myself.

It's not a terrible drive from Cedar Park or RR to 2222, so if your wife will be working out there, and you don't mind living in a place with no soul, one of those two towns will certainly have what you need.

Ok, so upon inspection of an actual map, I now realize that I'm full of ****. I live north of 183, so my perception of what's "north" is a little skewed.

Here's the problem: Right now, we're in Richardson - close-in suburb with great schools and parks, but also cool funky 50s and 60s pier-and-beam houses in a solid, quiet neighborhood for $150-170k. Am I going to find ANYTHING like that in Austin in that price range? I realize central Austin is out of the question, but I need better schools anyway as we do plan on kiddos down the road.

Austin is still a remote possibility for us, but I want to at least have some ideas where to look if it does happen.

Well, you might consider the area east of Burnet near 2222. I'm not real fond if it right now, but it's kind of on the cusp of the north-pushing "gentrification". I don't know what smaller houses are going for, either, but I imagine you might find what you want.

The good news is that it feeds into McCallum High School, which is pretty near the top of the AISD food chain. (It's definitely below Anderson and maybe one or two others, but it has a lot of good qualities. So do several of the area elementary schools. I don't know about middle schools -- I think by definition all middle schools suck.) A house in those neighborhoods should be a damned good investment.

Is Shoal Creek way out of the price range? The houses in there sound like what he wants, and it's right were he needs to be.

east of Burnet, it's called Koenig Lane. Don't you know that gonig west to east, 2222 becomes Northland, becomes Allandale Road, becomes Koening, becomes 290 E?

Gotta love Austin. 2-3 names for every road.

Sasquatch69,

My sister is a 4th grade teacher in Round Rock, she lives in the area just south of 183 inside of 620 (Balcones Woods/Country Club housing). Schools are awesome....I am not sure of the price range but I could ask her if you are still interested.

Thanks, Tennessee. I'm OK for right now, this thread has given me a good idea of where to look if I end up needing to.

Right now, since it's a remote possibilty my wife (rightly) told me I shouldn't spend too much time thinking about it - so I won't.
