Austin Marathon -- Roll Call

Who's in?

For me, Houston was a "Tale of 2 Halves".........I was breezing along at a sub 3:50 pace, when sometime after the halfway point, I simply shut down, and struggled to a 4:14 finish, some 20 minutes over my "goal". I'm really anxious to get to the start line on Sunday.

Love this course that takes you on an outstanding tour of the city.

Weather is not ideal, but not terrible.....temp in the 50's at start, warming to low-to mid 60's by 11........though the northerly breeze should be nice in the home stretch from Hyde Park to South Congress.

Anyone else?

I'm in, trying to have a strong finish in the Austin Distance Challenge.

I have never been happy with my result in an Austin Marathon. My first was my first-ever marathon and I was grossly underprepared. Was crusing along at a sub-3:30 pace, hit the wall bigtime and finished in 3:51. A year later, I tried running on achilles tendonitis. I'd finished Dallas in 3:05 only two months before, but finished in 4:45 in Austin, due to walking almost half.

A sub-3:00 on a somewhat hilly course will make me very happy. Need to get this Austin Marathon monkey off my back.

I'm in. This is my 2nd marathon (Maui was first-last September). The hill at mile 24 (Speedway) will not be a welcome sight.

My training was non-existent from December thru early January (plantar fascia issues). May do the Country Music Marathon in Nashville next and then the Marine Marathon (D.C.) in the fall.

I think I am one of those nuts who wants to try to do the 50 marathons in 50 states thing (if my body holds up).

Public Service Announcement- The Alamo Drafthouse is showing the Spirit of the Marathon on Saturday. I think this documentary does a good job of showing the varying motivations of those who decide to take on the challenge of 26.2.

running the full...will be my first full marathon...CAN'T SLEEP! best of luck to everyone running!

How'd everyone do?

I did well. I credit near-perfect conditions. Could you ask for a better day to run? Even had light tailwind for the last 8 miles. Nice!

I knew I was going to struggle today due to my lack of long runs in the build up. However, the weather was great and overall I enjoyed the experience.

My favorite moment was one of the bands playing Cinnamon Girl as we passed by.

I ran the 1/2 in 2:00 which was about what I expected. I ran the 1/2 at San Antonio 6 minutes faster but it was very flat. The hill on 15th street is brutal that late in the race.

My brutal hill was Dean Keaton. If that hill had been a mile or two back, I might've slammed into the wall. The fact that I only had two miles to go is all that kept me going through it. Then I saw the tower on the left and that cheered me up enough that I finished my last mile in about the same time as my first. Awesome.

For the first time ever, and that includes 5 previous marathons, I was totally prepared for this run, and turned in my PR....by 9 minutes. Now a 3:48 isn't earth shattering, but it was an absolute thrill for me personally.

During the fall when in town for Football games, I probably mashed those hills at Dean Keaton and again on 12th Street over a dozen times. So when I got to them on Sunday, the didn't seem quite as steep or quite as long.

It was an absolutely perfect day for me.....I've never felt better during, or after a run. And I needed something like this after an absolutely miserable back half in Houston last month.
