So my good friend is bringing his serious GF down to see Austin, shes from minneapolis, him dallas. shes been to Tx maybe once. My friend is tryin to show her the greatness that is Austin so she will agree to move down when he goes to law school next yr most likely. its basically an austin showcase in 24 hours.... with one hang up: shes a jewish girl that strictly adheres to the kosher diet and he has to play along despite him being catholic <thats a whole nother thread>.

SO, i need some ideas on where to take em to eat that would be ok for 'kosher-ness.' the way he put it is that she will only eat meat from a kosher butcher or from a 'kosher place' like katz. in other words, im at a loss for where to take em to eat and keep it 'austin.' they are gettin down here this friday at 4 and headin out mid afternoon saturday.

Definately do not go to Katz's. Maybe the Dell Center has something they can do.

Austin sucks for stuff like this. Its one of those places where it's better to live than visit and some of the stuff takes a while to sink in.

This isn't a problem at all. When faced with kosher restrictions, go to good vegetarian places. Nu Age Cafe is 95% vegan, so that should be decent. You can do bar b q - I think - since butcher paper meets the requirement of not reusing plates for certain things. I am fairly sure the Whole Foods flagship keeps mostly kosher.

HEB on Far West has a kosher deli. Maybe someone there can give you some restaurant advice. I wouldn't think just any old vegan restaurant would do, assuming she wants a true kosher meal. Doesn't the kitchen have to pass muster and be "certified" (or whatever they call it)? Merely claiming to conform to kosher standards might not carry much weight with someone who is really concerned about it.

Katz's is kosher STYLE, but not kosher.

The only actual, rabbi-certified commercial kosher kitchen in town is at the HEB off of Far West. I'm sure the Dell Center has one, but it's not open to the general public.

I'm serious. There's ONE commercial kosher kitchen.

Now, if she just avoids pork, mixing meat and cheese, that sort of thing, there are other choices. But if she's STRICT kosher -- she ain't gonna like Austin.

Honestly, when the super-kosher guys come down from NY, they bring their own food. I'll never forget the time a buddy of mine had bought a BRAND NEW BMW and his boss came down from NY and started eating a tin of stinky *** sardines in the backseat. It was greatness.

and yeah, HEB is the only place.

preciate the help. startin to ebb on teh side of he can do just as much research as i can to appease the kosherness, got a feeling the girl already dislikes all of his homeboys he grew up with anyhow <me included>. we'll just get good and liquored up and ill tell em the pork chops are kosher.

haha vibro, my thoughts exactly.

some **** went down and they cant make it down, shucks. kinda sux tho b/c hes still in the 'best friend' category so i woulda liked to hang out w/ em. o well
