Can someone recommend a good florist for me? Bonus points for being near or north of downtown.

I had a great one years ago in California that did huge bouquets for like $35-40. Used stargazers, etc., smelled terrific for days.

Flower Bucket. It is at about 31st & Lamar just north of Campus/Pease Park/Downtown. They always do great arrangements for roughly the range you are looking at.

Kabloom! over on Far West. Right off of Mopac.

They put together a boquet that made my girlfriend weep with joy. They have a lot of different flowers, ones that you don't see all of the time.

I've always found the Flower Bucket to be quite pricey for what you get.

I was going to suggest Flower Bucket, too, but someone beat me to it.

In the overpriced but gorgeous category is Verbena, located on 35th just east of Mopac.
 
I've always been pleased with Central Market. You just give them a price range and brief description of what you want, they'll do the rest.

For example, "I'd like an elegant arrangement for my mom's 60th birthday for around $60, " or "I'd like two small arrangements for a buffet table with a blue/lavender color scheme, about $20 each."
 
I'm friends with the owners of Flower Bucket. They're old-school Austinites and good people. Austin High, the whole 9 yards. Give them your business.
 
Cowgirls and Flowers is in the downtown area just west of Lamar off 5th or 6th Street, I believe. They do less conventional arrangements, really nice-hope they are still there, it's been awhile-better send Ms. Accurate some flowers for Valentine's.
 
I'm friends w/ the folks who opened up Kabloom on Far West. They are great people and seem to be doing a real good job w/ the stuff I've seen.
 
OK, I'll be trying Flower Bucket, they were very nice on the phone. A few people recommended Cowgirls and Flowers and I called them first, but she said they "couldn't do much" for $40. I might try KaBloom next time, then go with whoever was better after that.

After-action report:

Flower Bucket came through with a small but quite beautiful vase of flowers for me @ $40. Would use them again, but it wasn't enough to keep me from trying another place to compare.

That said, my wife was very pleased.
 
I wholeheartedly recommend King florist on Medical pkwy. They do great work and deliver fast. I just call and give them my VIP password and they bill me.
