Thinking of taking my lady out for a drive this weekend (since the weather should be so lovely!) and maybe an overnight stay somewhere fun. Don't want to necessarily do the traditional Fredericksburg-type thing and tubing's out.

Any ideas?

I took my girlfriend to Bandera, TX this past weekend and had a blast. Two hour drive from Austin depending on how you go. Lots of little shops in Bandera. Plenty of bars and honky tonks. Last weekend was Riverfest, basically bands, drinks, food and classic cars on the shore of the Medina river.

The food was fantastic at the Grotto and inexpensive too. Good beer selection, but few wine choices. I had a Jamican jerk chicken, avacado, and pineapple pizza with several different cheeses that rivals any pizza that I have ever had anywhere. My gf went with the salmon sandwich with wasabi mayo and a bunch of other great toppings. All in all a really great dining experience. Oh yeah, the 18 yo waitress was

Stayed at the Old Town Square hotel right on Main. The web site makes it look nicer than it really is. The bar and restaurant look great, but the rooms are really lacking. It wasn't that bad, but I was hoping for a little nicer room.

We went to 5 different bars that all had live music. Silver Dollar is a true TX dancehall. Feels like your in another era when you go in there. 11th street Cowboy Bar was big and modern. Blue Genes felt like a small Ropers or Dallas Nite Club. Bandera Saloon was small on the inside, but had big patio that was very comfortble.

All in all a great weekend. Not expensive, fun, and close to home.

that real ale party in blanco is sounding good to me. you could combine it with a stop off at the salt lick, and/or kicking around in wimberley.
