Austin Cedar Allergies Are Killing Me!

The cedar count in Austin has been terrible this week. It was really high Monday, but today felt much worse with all the wind. This is the worst time in which to be in Austin, and I dread leaving the house to go to class. Any advice as far as treatment would be welcomed.

Allegra-D helps me. It's still a prescription, so you may want to try over-the-counter Claritin-D or Zyrtec-D.

man, for real. my gf basically lives in a cedar forest. who would have thought i could breath easier in houston than austin?

claritan ftw.

I've tried Claritin, Zyrtec, and Allegra. This year it was so bad none worked, so my Doc gave me a shot or Cortisone. IT IS HEAVENLY!!! I'll never go another year without it.

SoS, you can also just take a tube of over the counter Cortisone and empty it into your nasal cavities. While it won't cure you of your allergies, they won't be your only concern. You are welcome.

Cedar has never bugged me till this year. It does if it is combined with lots of humidity or molds. That has been the case both times Cedar flared up this year. Sucks. I am taking Benadryl at night so i don't wake up too icky. Plus Benadryl knocks me the hell out. Night Horns.

Claritin-D during the day, and two Benadryl before I go to bed at night. Been feeling pretty good this week, in spite of the ridiculously high cedar levels. I've been on this regimen for about three weeks now. After the first week or so, I have pretty much become immune to the drowsiness caused by the Benadryl.

I hear Allegra and Zyrtec are really good, although Zyrtec has only recently become available OTC. These are probably better recommended over my above regimen, which is probably not a bad way to go if your prescription drug coverage sucks.

Cedar (actually juniper) is one of the few things about Austin I won't miss when we move soon. Quite frankly, if they ever find some disease or parasite that caused all the juniper bushes to rot, I would rejoice.

I take Allegra and flo-nase every day...I'm allergic to everything, and I have two cats and a dog....the medication works most of the time, but when the cedar gets this high, it's too much for the meds to handle. I guess it's the price to pay for living in heaven.

I take Allegra non-D. My nose is too dry to take the decongestant per my doctor. I used to take the 24hr version but I would wake up in the middle of the night sneezing bad. So I take the 12hr version in the morning and at night. Works better now. Oak is what kills me. My wife told me that I had been sneezing in the night again so I started back up recently after being off since June.

I'm having cedar fever probs in Miami, it came over on the cold front.

Some people simply move.

I didn't realize that I was probably allergic to something until I moved from Texas. Then I realized I could almost always breathe through both nostrils at the same time. It was an amazing revelation.

Allegra D and Nasacort steroid nasal spray

When I went to school here I figured I just got a long cold. Never realized I had allergies. This time when I moved back it kicked me in the ***. The irony is my wife (who is allergic to everything) is fine. I'm not allergic to anything on this planet other than this cedar **** and it pwns my ***.

I'm going to put my sawzall to work on this issue I think...

Amen. I've had the shot the last two years when cedar season is at it's peak, also due to nothing else working for me. I feel a difference within a couple of hours after the injection.

I used to have really bad allergies here. I could probably count on having really bad allergies about twice a year. And I always knew when they were coming.

Honestly, I have no more allergies. At least, not what they used to be like. MAYBE a few sniffles and some sneezing. But that's it. Now, If I have a few sneezes and stuffy nose, I know it's really bad out. But, it's not NEARLY what it used to be.

How did they go away? Well, I'm not real sure. But, I can pinpoint when they started to subside. It's when I started eating really well, working out all the time, and heavily supplementing my diet with Omega 3 fats. I can't say for sure if those were the reasons my allergies went away, but there's definitely a corellation.

I really think Omega 3 fats are a cure-all.

So take this anecdotal story for what it's worth. Mine are almost completely gone. And I never suffer from them anymore.

Jala Neti...also known as nasal irrigation. Seen it at pharmacies marketed as Sinuclense. May seem gross at first, but it works wonders.

If cedar & molds weren't bad enough already, we've had to deal with the wind the past 3 days. I'm freakin dying from headaches on top of bad allergies.

F wind.

The cedar has always killed me too. I live in Houston now but my wife's family is still there so we are there with some regularity.

I started getting the imotheraphy shots at the end of last summer. I can tell you that they've really made a difference thus far. I'm anxious to see how I am around the cedar. That one was always really bad and I'm hoping that these shots have done the trick for cedar like it has for other things so far.

my nose is usually something fierce. nothing has really ever worked for me. i'd say flonase helped the most a couple of years ago. i've never been this sensitive to cedar before, but i guess the record levels this year have brought out something that i've never seen before. i thought it was mostly ragweed for me, but looks like if the cedar is ridiculously high, then i can be pretty miserable as well.

if i take claritin for about a week or two straight, then it helps out usually as well.

Mine have not been as bad this year or as often, I should say. A post above got me to thinking. I have been eating a good amount of local honey this past year. Hmmm. Not a cure all but they are better. I say this as I have a small headache with congestion but not stifling or too painful. Two excedein and sudafed will kick its ***. I am out of Claritin though.
