Austin barber recommendations

I have been going to the Sportsman on 38th for 15 years, but I think I am done. Bob died (goddamit, I still miss the hell out of him, and think about him all the time). I had Bill cut my hair after Bob died, but now Bill has left (Kim ran him off -- she has ruined the place).

I need to get a haircut this weekend, but for the first time in over a decade, am lost. I live pretty central. Crestview Barber Shop is not far from me -- should I try there? Any reviews?

Any other recommendations? I am a $12 haircut kind of guy, and I go to barber shops, not salons or places in the mall. I want a place where they have pictures on the wall from a fishing trip taken in 1978, copies of Sports Illustrated with Gayle Sayers on the cover, and maybe even a fridge in the back with a couple of frosty beverages. In short, what the Sportsman USED to be.

Help me. Please.

Any opinions on these other places?

Casey Barber Shop (on Justin)

Anderson Lane Barber Shop

Weldon Barber Shop (also on Anderson)

All of them are open on Saturday mornings, and all are $12 for a cut. Anyone have any reviews on any of them?

God, I hate this. I seriously feel like I'm going to cry.

Wooten on 21st/guad. Great atmosphere. Only problem is that a cut is $15, so around $20 with tip. But hey, you get to watch pirated movies and watch hot college *** walk past the window.

Been going to the Woo for 10 years now. James. (stay away from Don. He is moody and his attitude is reflected in the haircuts.) Ralph and Cisco are solid. No dead animals on the wall, but always an updated stack of porn, movies and co-eds walking by.

I left Sportsman after Mike Ivey moved to San Saba. Place hasn't been the same since it was just Jim, Mike and Frost. Last time I went in there, there was a woman working there and the trophies had all been dusted. Shame.

I went to the Woo back when I was in undergrad. Honestly, I would prefer a place with a more "adult" crowd. One of the things I liked about the Sportsman was that I would often run into my peers there.

And Mike Ivy was my first go-to guy at the Sportsman. I was sad when he left, but then went to Jim. When Jim began to lose his touch, Bob had come on board, and he took care of me, and became a dear friend until his death. I remember going to a fish fry there on a Wednesday afternoon, to celebrate one of Mr. Frost's birthday.

I'm outside, eating a plate of fried fish (that Jim had caught), drinking a cold beer, and shooting the **** with some judges and buddies from around town. THAT'S the kind of place I miss, and that I'm looking for.

Tarrytown Barber Shop on Exposition is a good place. They cut Mack's hair among others. Rent is high in that center though so a cut runs $18 now plus tip. It's 3 old ladies though, so the gossip isn't necessarily about football and hunting.

I tried out the new Birds Barbershop on South Lamar. $19 for a cut. Loud rock music, foosball table, alternative chicks cutting your hair, and I got a good haircut.

I'm going back.

I think it's called Hyde park Barber or something.

It's on Airport just north of 45th in that shopping center where Amazonia Aquariums is. It's pretty solid. All the barbers wear Guyaberas.

Hyde Park sounds interesting. And tell me about Buckhorn?

Does anyone have any thoughts on any of the places I mentioned in my second post?

Another thumbs-up for Birds. Got a haircut there yesterday. But, as others have said, it's not the old-school kind of place Brisket is looking for.

I thought Buckhorn was closed. When I was growing up it was on 183, just south of Peyton Gin - did it move?

I vote for the Hyde Park Barber Shop.

I've been going there for about 5 years now.
Good atmosphere, good guys.
I was nervous when he first brought out that straight razor, but it's a great touch.

12$.

I got my last cut at Bird's as well. Cool place, good haircut. I did not know what kind of place it was at all before going in, but I dig it. It's laid back.

I love Pete's Flat-top Shop at Burnet and Koenig. Despite the name, they do all kinds of cuts, not just flat-tops. The guys are all really cool, and it's in your price range. I sometimes grab a 6-pack at the 7-11 next door and take it in there to share with the guys.

And one of the barbers is an aggy, so we talk some smack when I go, all in good fun, of course!

I'm switching from Bird's to Pete's Flat Top Shop. For one thing, I live much closer to Pete's these days.

I dropped in for the first time yesterday and gave Pete's son Joe carte blanche on whatever he thought would work -- he did good. Gave me a "brush cut". Nice guy, too.

UPDATE:

I went to Hyde Park a few times. A good haircut, at a good price, but kind of a spartan place. Not much going on socially, not much for the kiddos to see or do while I'm there. I'm fine going back there, but I decided I wanted to try someplace else, so I hit Pete's Flat Top Shop (which, I realized, is all but walking distance to my house).

It was perfect. Dead critters on the walls, lots of old magazines (cars, sports, outdoors, etc.), a copy of the day's paper sitting on the chairs. As I got my haircut, my kiddos chatted with the barbers, and waited until I was done to get a lollipop out of the bucket they keep on the side.

It was a little pricier -- $17, and I just gave him a $20, but everyone there was cool, there was an actual vibe to the place, and they are open till 7:00 during the week (which is helpful for me on the occasions I have to get a cut during the week, as I can't make it anyplace by 6:00, usually).

I'll be going back. It's not glamorous, it's not fancy, it's pretty old-school -- and it's my kinda place.

Pete's got a big bump for me when Joe not only introduced himself but the other 3 barbers (including his dad). That's old school.

Pete's Flat Top Shop, on Burnet north of 2222.

I personally let Phillip there cut my hair. Been there since the 50's, Pete is still there, so is his son. Tues-Sat, Regular cut like 15 bucks.
