austin aztex

the austin aztex (united soccer league) have their first game on saturday night at nelson field.

the ticket prices are $18 and $22, which seems high. you can get express baseball tickets for $6. i know 6 or 7 guys who watch soccer on a weekly basis but none of us are too interested in driving out to nelson to fork over that much money.

to anyone who has seen usl soccer, how's the quality level?

I agree that the price is too high. I still will go to a few games, but I'll skip most of them. I think Puerto Rico is one of the best teams in the league, FWIW they made the final four in the CONCACAF champions league. They won their home leg of the semifinal 2-0, but when they went to Mexico City to play Cruz Azul, they just sat back in (not well organized) defense, and waited for CA to knock in two goals. (I think CA won on penalties in the end.)

I attended the Aztex / Columbus Crew game a couple of weeks ago. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of play. I'll be attending some of the games.

I was very happy to hear that we were getting a team. I was planning on going to all of the home matches this summer because I am a teacher and need to be entertained. However, if the cheapest ticket is $18, Im out.

I would say that USL is just a little below MLS. They have the advantage of attracting younger players because they don't force them to sign a long term contract like MLS.

And we have a Mersey-side legend as the manager.

I used to go see the USL team here in Atlanta before it folded. It's basically AAA for MLS, and guys move up fairly frequently (at least, the top performers do). $20 seems a bit steep; I believed I paid about $10 to sit amongst the hooligans.

A friend of mine here in Buenos is from the greater Manchester (UK) area. Her boyfriend has just moved to Austin to play for the team. I'll find out his name so that you can properly cheer/jeer him.

PS- It's the same friend (girl) who is currently working for AFA. She never gave me more info on the players being sick on the return flight from Bolivia.

As someone who has never watched a competitive soccer game live but had watched a few on TV late night I was thinking of going to see my first. With these prices it would cost me about $100 or more with snacks to take my family. No thanks.

Tonight I was informed that there is a possibility that I might be attending the "Superclasico" between Boca Jrs & River Plate in the Bombonera this Sunday.

I wouldn't have to pay, but I would have to work... as a "translator" (I'm assuming Spanish to English) for a few FIFA reps from Nigeria.

I will inform everyone if it comes to pass. I'm not holding my breath, but it would be a cool story if it happens.

PS- I would be "a family of one" and I would be spending considerably less than 100 pesos[/b.

Get on the good side of the Nigerians by talking food with them.

Egusi soup, FuFu and Akara should all get smiles from them. Don't ask them if they have any inheritance money for you.

Regarding ticket prices, too much. I was planning on going to a bunch of games. Now, a couple. I could affod it but yeesh, that is way too much. And the poster with family and kids, I don't blame you for not going. This is hardly bargain enteratinment.

I would think they would do what they could to get butts in the seats and then gradually raise the seats once a core fan base is established. They are trying to mind trick us or something.

I used to go to the Lonestars games back in the day and it was the place for the Austin soccer community to hang out but tickets were way cheaper than that.

I don't think I have ever paid more than $7 for any event at Nelson Field.

I heard a radio ad on 590am today actually touting this league as the best soccer in the US and specifically better than MLS.

Is this true or are they just trying to con folks into over paying for tickets?

It is the league below MLS, so it shouldn't be more skilled.
That said, the US team that made it farthest in the CONCACAF champions league was from this league, not MLS.

I am excited to check out some of the games anyways, but I do with the price was more reasonable.

Gooooo Aztex.

And on the Nigerian/Superclasico front....

It turns out that only one guy from Nigeria is coming into town and he's not getting in town until right before the game. They waited until the last minute to get their visas to travel here and possibly only one guy was able to secure a visa.

So not only will I not be haning with some guys who might know someone who included me in their will, I won't be babysitting/translating during the game, which means I won't be going to the game for free and sitting in a box seat.

Oh well, maybe I'll watch it at a bar.
