Austin American-Statesman:
Why does Texas always seem to have so many devastating injuries? Is there a problem with the training and conditioning program or is it just bad luck?
I hate when Texas uses injuries as an excuse almost every year (that and youth) to explain it's inevitable collapse. Coaches of the teams that are successful year in, year out, don't seem to harp on injuries or use them as an excuse (e.g. Baylor, UConn, even the aggy's).
You rarely heard Coach Strong use injuries as an excuse this season. He has the "next man up" mentality. No doubt Nneka's injury sent this team into an unexplainable tailspin from which it hasn't recovered. This has truly been one of the most perplexing season's ever.

I don't recall the staff or players using the injury bug as an excuse. They have the same mentality that you give Coach Strong credit for: player down, next one steps up.
Now I hear the injury excuse from fans, and not just Texas fans but from pretty much another team that has injuries and is not doing as well as expected.
If you follow other teams, you will also notice that they have injuries throughout the year. They are all recovering/adjusting to injuries as the season progresses. And fans are always questioning the S&C process as to whether that contributes to/lessens the injuries. Injuries are one reason I favor a full roster.
I do like that neither the staff nor the players have used the injury or youth excuse. Frankly, we are one of the most experienced teams around. We are lucky enough that two of our freshmen are talented enough to have earned starting spots over experienced starters.
Have they recovered mentally from losing Nneka? Well, that really still remains to be seen. It looks like they have. But it did seem to set them back on their heels for a bit of time. At this point, it is more a matter of making shots from the perimeter where I admit we have been in a slump pretty much the entire conference season rather than injuries that are impacting the W/L record.

What Babhorn said. Injuries aren't any more prevalent at Texas than they are at other schools; they are a fact of life for all programs and I've never heard a coach use them as an excuse. They might discuss the injuries, and of course they do impact results...no way to get around that. But the team makes adjustments and moves forward as best they can.
