The August 2008 issue of Volleyball Magazine is out, and it has a nice article on UT’s win at the Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championship a couple months ago. Kiley Hall and Ashley Engle were the winners of the top flight at the tournament, and Engle got a lot of ink in the article. There was also pretty decent coverage on cable a while back of the semi’s and finals, with a nice feature on Kiley and Ashley strolling the UT campus and playing out at Zilker, which is what we have instead of a beach - bummer, dude.
Hall and Engle pretty much shredded the competition, not losing a single game. In pool play, they whipped Nebraska’s Jordan Larson and Tara Mueller and then did the same to San Diego. Nebraska managed to work their way back to the semi’s only to get thrashed again by the Horns, like, didn’t you get enough the first time?
In the finals, Hall & Engle teed off against USC’s Taylor Carico and Jessica Gysin. Yes, USC, our nemesis from the indoor NCAA’s last year. We got some retribution on the sand, as UT crushed USC even worse than they did Nebraska. 21-9, 21-11. Ouch. When you get beat -9 and -11, you’re getting dogged pretty bad.
This was the second good year in a row for Ashley on the beach. In last years’ Collegiate championship, she and Alyson Jennings were the only team to beat Sarah Pavan and Jordan Larson.
In this years’ other flights, there was also an amazing amount of ownage of Cornhuskers. Both of our next two teams of Michelle Moriarty & Chelsey Klein and Jennifer Doris & Heather Kisner beat Nebraska in both pool play and the semi’s.
Not surprising that Kiley and Ashley did so well. I suspect Texas is just borrowing these California girls. Ashley has already said she’d like to work her way into the AVP when her college career is over, and why shouldn’t Kiley give it a shot too?
