Augie: more with less

Tell us about another coach that could grind out the wins
Augie does, year after year, no matter what the skill levels
he has to work with. We are blessed with this man.

Honest disagreement with him over his love of the bunt aside and admitting freely he has forgotten more baseball then I will ever know he is definitely the best coach in college baseball, bar none.

Now please find us some offense Augie.

good grief, I just realized it's the same thing in all three major sports, lack of a good offense.

with Harsin, we've got the football solved?, Barnes needs to hire an offensive assistant, and we need some offense on the diamond.

wonder which one will be truly solved first?

Yes he is terrible...if you want the real story I will give it to you in an email. Trust me I have the stuff to back it up.

I'd rather have Augie than any other HC. But I have to admit the over bunting drives me nuts. I'm semi coming around to the Jamesian style of play for college level ball, so maybe I'm biased....but I do appreciate Augie.

Harmon has been the recruiting coordinator since Augie has been here. If that has changed then that change was very recent. If this is true then that is great news. This would mean Harmon does absolutely nothing but coach the catchers. Augie should let Skip coach the hitters too.

I am going to go with no.

Who would have ever thought Brandon Belt would make the majors as a hitter? Drew Stubbs as a hitter was no better when he left. Charley Carter from nothing to stud. Moldenhauer went from a high draft choice to not one.

Augie's recent success is largely the result of having a pitching coach who knows what he is doing. He may have been encouraged to hire Hooten, but it is no coincidence that we were average at best with a mediocre guy teaching the staff.

No one had three guys who could hit the ball harder than our three from last year - Rupp, Keyes, Moldenhauer. We had guys with championship genes - Loy, Ruffin. We had Jungmann. We didn't get it done.

His teams don't give up. Offensively, Augie is very Greg Davis esque.

Obviously, we do a lot right as we are and have been one of the top programs over the last 10 years.

I am baffled by our often poor performances offensively. Rowe and Danks are too other guys who seemingly either didn't improve or underachieved. Maybe both.

Collectively as a staff, we don't really get it done. I don't know how much it is part philosophy (we spend an inordinate amount of practice time bunting), part defense and pitching (spending an inordinate amount of practice there) or recruiting philosophy (heavy on the pitching).

I have seen a lot of guys who I thought had a considerable amount of talent on the offensive side achieve less than that potential.

I think this thread speaks to the fact that our natural talent and skills are undervalued. Our in game coaching is mediocre. You don't win a low scoring affair in 25 vs BC with stellar coaching moves. You don't win 1-0 in 15 with stellar coaching.

You do win those with a never say die attitude and good pre-game preparation.

Guys Augie is the best coach in college baseball! I agree the hitting is bad, it will get better or we will not make it Omaha! Hang in there it will come around!!

from what i saw marlow throwing off the mound last night, MLB hitters would have trouble hitting him. (good) Pitching beats hitting.

Oh, and congrats to our pitching staff and outstanding defense in the field. We didn't cough up a game b/c of defensive breakdowns like TCU did last night. If we play TCU again in the supers I like our chances

I am not qualified to say whether Augie is the best coach in college baseball as coverage is too little to really know. I have seen enough to know that if you consider him the best in game coach, then baseball coaches are beyond sucky. Good thing about baseball is that in game strategy is a relatively small part of the game.

If I had money to spend on a staff, I would spend it on the best pitching coach you can find. Again, I don't know if we have the best, but the results are pretty outstanding. I would keep ours without a doubt.

With that being said, we have a pathetic offense and from year to year it generally underachieves. Two years ago at the CWS, people were shocked at our power. In my opinion, it was two things. One is our home park is not conducive to huge power numbers. The other is the brain trust whether that be philosophy, reps, or otherwise.

This team can make a run at the CWS without a doubt. The pitching staff may wear down because every game is a grind even when they give up 3 runs or less.
