Audition on Britain's Got Talent:

I don't understand why this all over the news. It's not THAT surprising that an ugly person has a good voice. (see: Amy Winehouse and the fat chick from C&C Music Factory)

Check out the YouTube of the dance troupe Flawless from the same link. First of all, black dude with British accents are tremendously sexy, and then to have a whole group of guys who can dance like that ... allsome!

As a teacher who deals with a lot of special ed students, the first thing I thought of when I saw her, her mannerisms, her personality was "SpEd." KInd of quirky, probably never really fit in anywhere, I'd imagine growing up was less than wonderful for her. She's 47, she's never been "discovered," and when she walks on to stage, I had visions of William Hung or worse, since she sort of looks like my grandmother - and the thought of my grandmother being humiliated (and of being humiliated for her) was like watching train-wreck in slow motion. Which is the bread and butter of these shows...

Then she starts to sing, and the look on the judges faces, and the reaction of the crowd...I teared up. Okay, more than teared up... I cried.

I'm showing it to all of my students today - and they get it. "Don't judge." It's a good reminder of something we learned in kindergarten but have forgotten along the way.

pretty cool. I always get emotional when i see or read stories about people having dreams fufilled. That room was pretty electric, especially when she sang those first notes.

i think people also love it because, how often have we felt that we were too ugly or too fat or too old and that society prejudges us before we ever have a chance to prove ourselves. People can identify with that emotion.

not in a million years would i buy music of that style and type, but that was pretty cool.

Good call, abq.

Here's the rest of the story.

DoobieWah's link should be required reading. For everyone.

(Especially the jerks on these boards who only tip the Sonic carhop if she's hot.)

Texanne:

Agree with you re the link above. I didn't think the video could be topped, but that is a very nice story as well.

That was great and heartwarming, but they knew what she could do coming in.

This is an example of Simon doing an excellent job of promoting his show and a future client!

The only reason why this is a story at all is because the woman, while having singing talent, is singularly unattractive.

And the reason why that's a reason for this being a story is because the public is spoon-fed their daily dose of media darlings, where everyone is beautiful, thin, wears fashionable clothes, drives a new car, and can afford to shop at the trendiest stores.

Much as the media is now making this a story. Ironic, isn't it? The "media" trains people to expect a certain kind of person as entertainer, and now they make a big deal when someone comes along who doesn't conform to the mold they created.

As much as I like this story, and I do, I think that she was "made up" to look her worst. Her facial features aren't horrible, but the make up, the dress, the eyebrow that could easily have been plucked and/or colored, all this serves to make her look her worst. Just like falsies on the pretty one's, this woman was made up to play the part.

Don't get me wrong, I wish her well, but it's part of the show.

Just looking at it, the camera angles, the facial expressions chosen from the audience, the comments, the little grin just before she starts to sing, the facial reactions of the judges, the backstage comments. It did look scripted. Damn good scripting and way better fare than I'm used to from televion. I was entranced and remain so.

If you read the article, it says that she dressed herself (a gown she'd purchased earlier for her nephew's wedding) and did her own make-up. So It's not quite the manipulation some of you are making it out to be - don't be so jaded.

On a more positive note, I think it's interesting that perhaps one of her wishes has already come true. She stated that she'd like to become as famous as Elaine Paige - well not only had I never heard of Elain Paige, but I didn't even know how to spell her name for the google search. She may be the first lady of London's musical theater, But I'd guess that by now Susan Boyle is known more worldwide.

I don't care about the back story. She effing knocked one out of the park in front of a big time audience. Good for her.

Wow! I am so glad I watched that. And thank you also for the backstory.

She can't get that song to iTunes fast enough as far as I'm concerned.
