Auburn Defense

How do they keep doing it?

They only score 3 pts and STILL WIN!!!

Chizik leaves and they still dominate. Muschamp leaves, and they still dominate.

Surely the talent level isn't THAT different in Alabama.

What explains it?

1. Tuberville is THAT good?
2. Right athletes for their schemes?
3. Crappy offenses in the SEC?

Why can't Texas replicate that success? After all, we have had all their successful DC's.

In three games so far, Auburn has given up zero, 13, and 2 points. The SEC has LSU, KY, Arkansas and other good offensive units... but their D remains stellar.

Combination of the first two. This may be the best defense Auburn has had since 1988, however. It is definitely, at least thus far, the most fundamentally sound and best tackling unit at least of the Tuberville era (and probably, once again, since the late '80s).

What's particularly interesting is that, while Auburn generally recruits well on both sides of the ball, this coaching staff finds diamonds in the rough on defense. Looking at AU defenders under Tuberville that have had pro careers, Karlos Dansby and Dontarrious Thomas were undersized HS WRs. Rod Hood was an option QB (and a walkon). Will Herring was an option QB who had offers from Auburn and Middle Tennessee (and that's it). Reggie Torbor was a RB. Sen'Derrick Marks, projected as a first rounder if he comes out early this year, at least played defense in HS, but rivals called him a 2 star and nobody'd ever heard of him.

Tubs & co. see things that other coaches don't, and know how to coach 'em up into top notch defenders.

Auburn really has a good D, but Mississippi State offense IS that bad. Almost every D in the top 25 would hold them to 2 pts or less. Unless mississippi state's d scored, which is usually how msu scores.

MSU's offense is bad, but Auburn opponents have converted on 1, 2, and 0 3rd downs, respectively, in the Tigers' 3 games this year.

I too have pondered this same question.

I think it's a little bit of everything. Apparrently they have better players than we do. I just cant understand why this would be the case though. Maybe they have a different philosphy on D at Auburn.

Thier players are put in better positions to succeed.

SEC offenses (especially the one they have played) arent that good.

If no one scores in the Big Ten..........it's because the offenses suck.

If no one scores in the SEC.........it's because the defenses are AMAZING.

As to the main issue, yes, Tubberville is a hell of coach. Very underrrated in the 'best coaches in America' discussions.

Tubby is a defensive genius.

And as for SEC offenses sucking, negative. Florida put 40 something on Ohio State. LSU put 38 on the buckeyes. USC put 35 on them.

We have never really had an offense that likes to sit on the ball and grind out drives. We pass alot and score quickly. Our defense is on the field longer than our offense usually.

Also, when points are scored against teams quickly, they are more likely to try to get those points back quickly. You dont get the points back by running power isloation runs. You try plays that can move you down the field quickly. High scoring teams always have points scored against them. Alot of it is pshycological. One reason is because you can afford to gamble more. The goal is to win.

Do we overrate DCs from Auburn when its really Tubby getting those results?

The next DC we get from there needs to be Tubby himself.

You mean Auburn recruits players who are willing to change positions and do what's in the best interest of the team to win? Interesting recruiting tactic...
