Attrition and 2013 scholarships

TEXAS football had 17 underclassmen on scholarship for the spring of 2011 that are not on the roster for the spring of 2012. Eleven were on offense and six were on defense. Berryhill may have received his scholarship after spring practice.

I think the attrition for this year will be around 8 or 9. Combine that with the 10 seniors leaving and you get 18 or 19 scholarships available for signing day 2013. TEXAS could sign as many as 22 and stay under the 50 per two year limit, but would suffer more attrition or grayshirting in order to stay under the 85 total limit.

How many scolarships does TEXAS award in 2013?

As I understand it, the scholarship rule is 25 per season and 85 max total. 2012 had 25 new with the other three assigned to the previous year when only 22 new scholarships went out and attrition put us under the 85. Mack mentioned the 50 in his press conference for this particular situation. It may seem like a case of semantics but that is how the NCAA Manual states it.

I don't think TEXAS has 25 scholarships to award in 2013. As a matter of fact, I doubt TEXAS awards 20 scholarships in 2013. I think 19 is the number to look for and that means nine guys on scholarship right now won't be on scholarship next year. Nine is a big number for attrition considering 17 went bye-bye last year. Try and pick (privately, not here) nine names that might be leaving between now and next year. It is hard to do, I’ve tried and can only come up with five. For the most part, all the dead wood is gone, no pun intended. I'll say again, please don't list any names here, thanks.

That list of 17 was sure full of promise; of that group, I would have thought there were quite a few potential All-Americans on the list. Didn't turn out that way....

what is notable to me is 4 WRs and 2 TEs

I know TEs wouldn't play for Davis but is Harsin struggling with them too?

VYFan,

I remember each and every one of them committing. Looking back, I was really, really excited about only four or five of them. The rest were projects in my opinion, who I hoped would become All Americans with hard work and good coaching.

I certainly meant no disparage to any of our guys - they are all loyal Horns in my book, whether they played 4 years or not ever started a game. However to build a constant pipeline at a position you must bring in quality every year, and in some years you may take more than 1. The Mack Brown - Greg Davis combo failed to create a TE recruiting pipeline and our offense to this day continues to suffer from the lack of a threat from the TE position.
I realize that we have had a hell-of-a lot of bad luck there with injuries, but once again that is why you have to bring in quality every year.

Really speedway? I will show my lack of talent eye by admitting that I was exited about the futures of:

Gilbert - all world, threw a good soft pass + deep verticle game
Wood (great AA game)
Shead (good AA game)
Timmons - met the eye ball test
White - early 5* pick
Howell - great quickness
Brewster - bloodlines and work ethic

I also thought Jones would turn out to be a factor.

I won't quit my day job to become a scout.

All seventeen were/are great Longhorns. I'm just saying that I really, really got pumped about he futures of only a handful. No disrespect meant to anyone of them.

This is my wish list for 2013:

QB (1) - Tyrone Swoopes, JT Barrett, Cody Thomas

RB (1) - Dontre Wilson, Keith Ford, Kyle Hicks

WR (2) – Jake Oliver, Ra'Shaad Samples, Eldridge Massington,

TE (1) – Ricky Seals-Jones, Durham Smythe, Jeremiah Gaines

OL (4) – Kent Perkins, Darius James, Ishmael Wilson, JJ Gustafson, Patrick Morris, Josh Thomas, Austin Davis

DL (5) – Jake Raulerson, A'shawn Robinson, Torrodney Prevot, Deon Hollins, Jr., Vincent Taylor, Christopher Robinson, Justin Manning

LB (2) – Mike Mitchell, Brett Wade, Naashon Hughes, Deon Hollins

DB (3) – Su’a Cravens, Kameron Miles, George Baltimore, Antwuan Davis, Maurice Smith, Marcell Harris

I think this would be a highly rated class even with only 19 total.

Speedway: I would think Marcell Harris from Florida might belong on the DB list since Akina has been recruiting him and he seems pretty good and at this point still interested.

Concerning TEs, don't forget J. Finley. I wish he would have stuck around so we could see him as a Jr/Sr. TE has been decimated by injuries. The shifting of players from other positions has not worked too well over the years but it can, I suppose. That is a hard way to come up with a fast, good hands, good blocking TE.

TE Recruit history:

2012 - 0 TEs - Blueitt mentioned as a possibility

2011 - McFarland 4*

2010 - 0 - Darius Terrell 4* WR moved to TE (Parade All-American WR)

2009 - Barrett Matthews 3* (Rivals top TE in Texas); Graham - medical scholarship; Dom Jones converted from DL (not sure if he is with the team or not, was academically ineligible for bowl)

2008 - 0 - DJGrant ( converted from WR, injured for 2 seasons, 1 or 2 seasons left); L Poehlmann (OL moved to TE for 2011 to help blocking)

2007 - Irby (4* - injuries), Ahmard Howard (3*), Ian Harris (3*- injuries)

2006 - Britt Mitchell 3* moved to OL; Greg Smith 3* moved to OL then back to TE (NFL TE with Carolina)

2005 - J Finley 4*, left after Soph year to NFL

2004 - Peter Ullman 3* moved to OL

2003 - Tony Hills 5* moved to OL (good move); Steve Hogan 3*

2002 - David Thomas 4* (spoiled us!)

So we have Grant, Terrell, Matthews & McFarland to man the TE and H-Back spots.

I haven't mentioned Poehlmann since he was moved from OL to block at TE. He graduated in December and I am not sure if he plans to return for 5th season of eligibility (redshirted in 2088).

Would sure be nice to recruit 2 TEs but with a small number of scholarships available that may not happen. They need to be early players not projects!
