Attendance Last Night?

Let's just say they announced anyone in the mezzanine could come sit in the student sections. I thought we only did that when we played Concordia.

Having attended (and graduated from!) UT in the mid-to-late 1980s, and having sat in the morgue that was the drum for virtually every home game during the awful Bob Weltlich era, I say most Texas basketball fans simply suck ***. I grew up in Bloomington, Indiana so hoops are always first in my heart, but the lack of fans in Austin during the last decade of good-to-great teams drives me nuts. Indiana is God awful this year. Yet, the Hoosiers still draw 12,000 to 16,500 to watch the team lose night in and night out. Granted IU had to offer balcony seats for $5 to achieve that, but still. I will say Indiana only draws 30,000 for football. So, Indiana football fans suck too, but the IU football team sucks. Texas basketball certainly does not. I just wonder, what would Barnes have to achieve at Texas to get say an average of 14,000 game in the Drum? Or a better question, what would it take for 8,000 show up to watch Texas play UT-San Antonio or the like? Can Texas ever be a basketball school? If Barnes wins say 3 NCAA titles, would more people in Austin care or notice? I know for a fact the home game last Wednesday night (Mizzu), the game was awesome, but I bet many in the Drumm cared more about football signing day. If I am Rick Barnes, I am pissed by the lack of love and appreciation. Money only goes so far and I sure as heck bet he didn't say "no" to Kentucky a few years ago because of that very thing. But what the hell do I know, apart from if I lived in Austin or even San Antonio, I'd be watching these Texas teams in person. They are fun to watch!

To IndyHorn, there are numerous posts that we've discussed over the years. I have posted up and down on ways to help increase attendance, but I have reluctantly come to the conclusion that the ath dept just doesn't care.

There are 1 million things they could do to increase attendance (cheaper mezz seats --- my 4 season tix in the mezz are $20 each per game, ticket giveaways to local student groups, actual promotion of their cheap tix/discounts, etc) but they do nothing. I think the administration is just happy with the status quo.

I am convinced that one way to do something was to start some tailgating before some games. My brother and I initiated some talks between the dept and a local sports bar that was interested in doing something. Nothing happened. The sports bar said that the impediment was contracts, legalities, etc. that prevented the atheltic dept from allowing any vendors on the property. And then lo and behold, two games ago Drew Gresset was somehow able to get around all those problems to sell hamburgers out front.

drew gresset's hamburgers are fantastic!!!

his trailer is behind star bar on west 6th...

i remember back in my 'dancing goo' we would tailgate with a smoker up near the pavillion. then were told we couldn't do that. we couldn't have beer. etc.. etc... they just kept dogging us. are people even allowed to camp out anymore? i think i heard people couldn't do that anymore either.

those days were so fun. i feel sorry for the students of today that can't enjoy what we did. it was so much fun and basketball was fun to party for.

i can't even get myself to go to a game anymore because the mezzaine sucks and sitting half way up behind the basket sucks because the backboard support is an objection of view to the whole floor.

I have paid no more than $15.00 for tickets to a game in five years...usually $6.00. They are always Mezz seats. I have not sat in the Mezz since 1985.
