ATT Phone Dead - need new one

Where's that thread from a few weeks ago where someone had advice/ways to finagle a new/free phone?!?

Talked to Customer Care today, and they have never heard of a 'Customer Loyalty Dept' or whatever the hell was discussed in that thread.

My phone works, but the screen doesn't so I can't see ANY of my #'s in my phonebook (and there are about 200)

Told them:
- I wasn't interested in changing/altering my plan (i.e. increasing length of agreement)
- I didn't need an upgrade, just want a replacement with similar features so that I can see my #'s
- I've been a loyal ATT customer for 8+ years (which they could easily verify)
- I've purchased at least 8 phones in that period.

- CC on the phone (611) said the best she could do was $50, and the phone was clearly
worse than what I already had + she never heard of another dept that would help (as mentioned above). Suggested maybe a 'refurb'
(recommended heading to the AT&T store) - I did

- Best deal THAT guy could give me was $100 - and they 'don't do refurbs'

Oh, and they took ~40 minutes to ge to me at the store.

Yeah "**** ATT" - thinking about dumping them, but to leave a contract is $175 I was told by the 'helper'

Advice?

(Oh, and I have the T616 - GSM)

If you can wait a couple of days to get your phone this is a free flip phone online only for two days.

IMO they should waive the activation since you are a long term customer.

Okay, main purpose of starting this thread was to see if someone could revive the other one, which I could not find with a search (and appears to be total ********, anyhow).

You CANNOT get a new phone from AT&T, for nothing.... PERIOD!

After talking w/6 different 'customer care' representatives, I finally spoke to someone a little more in touch with reality...

CCRep: "Hi, this is Jonathan, how can I help you today?"
Me: "Well, Jonathan - it's like this: [explained bullets above]"
Jonathan: "Well, unless you're will to extend your plan, the cheapest phone in the style you want is $229 ($59 w/2 yr. plan extenstion)"
Me: "What about refurbs?"
Jonathan: "We don't do refurbs in what you're looking for"
Me: "What about warranty replacement?" ($24, btw for same phone)
Jonathan: "Well, your account says that it may have gotten wet, 4 months ago."
Me: "Yeah...."
Jonathan: "Warranty does not cover that."
Me: [sigh]: "Alright - what're my phone options again?"

[Starts reading off phone types, and I'm typing them into google so I can see a description of capabilities - Amazon.com is popping up with prices 1/4 what he's telling me]

Me: "Jonathan, if I were to by a phone on my own, say online, or at Best Buy, how much would it cost to switch the service over to the new phone?"
Jonathan: "That's free, sir"
Me: "No Charge? No extension of plan?"
Jonathan: "No sir."
Me: [pause]: "Jonathan, why would anyone ever purchase a phone through you guys?"
Jonathan: "Good question"

So, now.... I'm just looking for a good site with phones for sale and NO PLANs!

Haggle with them. It took me about 3 months (I was lazy too) for them to replace my phone with an acceptable one. I had to pay my $35 insurance deductible, but I signed no contract and got a great phone from them.

Just a simple question Squirrel. How old is your dead phone? Most At&T phones have a one year warranty and as long as it has not been abused, they should replace it at no charge.

MisterBevo - I think I understand, now... I would have read your line correctly if it read "is". (emphasis)

Anyhow, called 611 and spoke to Customer Reps #7 and #8, today, and neither of them had heard of it either.

To answer the other question, got it last December (less than 9 months old)

Anyway, long story short AT&T sucks **** through a straw.

Turns out, my brother got a new phone, let me have his old Motorla T721 (?) - simply switched out the SIM card and voila - in business, no call to AT&T, no wait time for activation.

Problem solved - thanks to all who offered suggestions.
