My brother in law and I have this bet going, he says sub captains only serve one year then they get put behind a desk, I say they are not limited to one year, who is right? I tried to google it and found nothing about it.

As a former nuclear submarine captain, I am more than qualified to answer your question, but then I'd have to eliminate you.

blacklab will know. He served on a nuke sub whilst in the navy, sailing the 7 seas. He was a Macho Man.

When I left in '98, 'Captain' tours typically ranged from 18 to 30 months. I would say most tours were right at 24 months. There were many reasons for the range in time of service

'Captains' were Commanders in rank (O-5). I can't speak as well for the SSBN 'boomer' community, but I believe the same holds. I believe there were some 2nd tour captains in the boomer fleet that were O-6 in rank.

Of course, this applies to the USN.

The XO and CO tours are completely separate in the sub community. Usually, the XO tours are shorter than the CO tours.

The BLUE and GOLD skippers turnover the boat with the crew. They remain the CO of the crew while the other crew is at sea. I would think they are still referred to as CAPTAIN.

I served on fast attack (SSN-689 and SSN-765).

All the captains I had served about 2-3 years on a boat.
The XO serves 2-3 years on a different boat before coming to his CO tour.
