Atlanta

I'm a newly graduated Longhorn in Atlanta, literally just moved out here yesterday and I was wondering how to find a network of UT alum that might be able to give me some pointers on what I should do and where I should go to meet people. Plus it would be nice to find a place/bar to watch the games with my fellow Longhorns.

I just moved to Atlanta and live in the mid-town area. I usually go to Jocks and Jills on 10th Street. I am counting on catching a few games there.

Here is something to start you off with:

Atlanta Texas Exes

Also do a search on this forum for Atlanta. There have been quite a few threads on here about things to do and where to eat.

Welcome to the ATL and Hook 'EM!!!

I can't ******* stand those Jocks-n-Jills places. The one in Brookhaven added beers to tabs, plus I watched the RRS there from 2000-2004 and swore I would never go back.

Things have been much better since then.

The one in Midtown is beyond horrible.

I didn't realize the one at Brookhaven had closed. Where are the Texas Exes meeting now for games?

For watching games in midtown, check out McCrays at about 7th and Peachtree. Scotty McCray is a good guy and his help isn't nearly as surly as the folks at Jocks-n-Jills.

I really haven't had the same experience at Jocks and Jills in Midtown that hullabelew mentions. Seems like it has been decent so far for catching a game and a couple of beers. I have been to McCrays, it is definitely nicer, although from what I remember, only a couple televisions.

We are still finalizing our new location, but it looks like we may be moving into Hudsons Grille, which replaced Jock's in Brookhaven.

I know the exes used to go to twised taco. In feb, I watched the horns at Pappasitos there with the exes. (actually it was all the exes orgs from the state of texas).

CMA, Thanks for the info. The setup in that place is nice. I just hope that the horrible mojo of me watching the RRS there is gone.

PM me if you would like some down low on the young scene in town. im 27 and still like to live like i am a drunk college frat kid. Depending on where you are moving from ATL can be a much different scene than Austin, Dallas, Houston, etc....

The Atlanta Texas Exes are pleased to announce our new location for watching Texas Football will be Hudson Grille in Brookhaven. Hudson Grill is part of the Metrotainment brand of restaurants (Joe's, Garrison's, Cowtippers.)

This site opened in August 2007 in a location familiar to many of you -- Hudson Grille Brookhaven is located in the same space as the former Jocks and Jill’s Brookhaven. However, although they share the same address, you will find very little inside that resembles the old Jocks. The entire building inside and out has been completely remodeled.

Hope to see you this fall for Texas Football!

Considering a relo to Atlanta from Austin and would appreciate any feedback you guys can offer?

I am not of the young crowd and will have a wife and 2 kids in tow, so the party scene wont be that important, just more curious about the city in general.

I am actually looking at a potential relo back to dallas when i am finally starting to like the city. I made a huge mistake in where i decided to live (atlantic station) just plain awful. Two murders since March and an invasion of the hip hop crowd have made in pretty interesting. But i would imagine having a family and living outside the perimeter would be great, but choose wisely based on where you are going to have to commute to for work. Traffic is just plain awful in the city. I travel almost every week so the airport commute is getting terribly old. Take me 2.5 hours sometimes on a friday to get from alpharetta to the airport...(roughly 30 miles) where are you going to look? work? etc....

Cost of living is great, lots of restaurants, hub of the cultural SE, lots of things to do, parts of the area remind me of austin (highlands, little 5) and lots of outdoors stuff to do as well. Within 4.5-5 hours of both the Gulf and the Atlantic Beaches....and north has some great NC mountain resorts.

Get ready for SEC football brainwashing, and pro sports teams that are not supported very well, and 24/7 Vick talk.

here are some links from other posters asking the same questions. They are a little dated but for the most part still accurate.

Like goat said, think about your commute. Rush hour can be terrible especially if there is a wreck. ( which is almost daily).

You can usually get more house outside the Perimeter ( I-285) than you can inside it. But of course that is where your commute time comes in.

Hullabelew is our resident Atlanta expert, hopefully he will comment soon.

Hullabelew?

I agree with the above posters. I live in mid-town but I am single. Normally I would travel every week to the airport but I am working in town right now. Sometimes my commute from mid-town to buckhead can take an hour (once almost two) in traffic. Without, it would be about 15-20 minutes.

The city reminds me a lot like Dallas in terms of people and atmosphere. A lot of people from all over the US. I like it better than Dallas, however.

There are some nice housing areas inside the perimeter, much like the M-street area in Dallas and they will be expensive. A lot of foreclosures are also happening here and there are quite a few houses on the market.
