Atkins works

No doubt about it. I was just on it, and I lost about 5 pounds in two weeks. Decided to ween off of it, and now I'm three pounds heavier then I was, though, I do work out , and I think I look leaner (hard to tell though).

I know most don't regard it as a long term fix, and some of you will say that I did something wrong with my current diet, but I've gained weight while eating a lot less than usual.

I realize one school of thought is calories out > calories in and you're good, but this Atkins thing seems to work.

Yes, I realize it is not 1998.

BTW, anyone have a cure for shin splints?

How much or how little you eat means next to nothing. It is what you eat, when and how much of it in relation to other things. You could have saved time and money by going to a nutritionist (provided you have insurance), getting a couple of tests, some menus tailored to you and your unique body. Basic exercise and voila, you have no temporary fix but a longer lasting one with better habits.

Congrats on losing some weight though. That has to be a good feeling. Here's to keeping it off. You smoke, right? Kick that addiction and you are golden. It has to be hard for somebody overweight who also smokes. So much working against a person. Props to you.

I'm actually not considered overweight anymore. It's been awhile since you've seen me. Probably about ten pounds lighter just cuz I stopped drinking everyday.

I don't remember you really being heavy, to be honest. I just assumed that you had put some on in marriage or something. Either way, congrats man. It does not have to be tough to keep it off either. Good habits are habits just the same. But remember to reward yourself and splurge from time to time. That and that ou sucks.

It's amazing how much easier it is to lose weight by quiting beer alone. I recently had to quit for 14 days because of a stomach virus that the doc treated with antibiotics. Since I couldn't drink, I decided to change my diet and times that I eat. I also walk for an hour every morning and I'm actually seeing some results for a change.

I did Atkins years ago and lost a lot of weight...but I really dont want or need to go absolutely no carbs anymore...lately ive just stopped eating carbs after dinner and ive noticed some good results.

Typical treatment for shin splints is rest, ice, and ibuprofen. As this is usually seen in newer runners this can be viewed as an overuse injury and sometimes relief can come from running on softer surfaces (trails vs. concrete) or buying a higher quality running shoe with good cushioning and support.

For most runners shin splints go away as your muscles and body adapt to the stress and pounding of running. If it continues you may need to consult a doctor or podiatrist.

Yeah, I think I want to give it a solid 2 months on the Atkins. Or, my version. Mainly lean meats. It is hard cutting bread, rice, pizza, fried foods, etc out of my diet. Man, I haven't had some greasy enchiladaas in a long time.

The biggest draw back on Atkins is it is the least forgiving of any diet, imo.

Thanks for the tips on preventing shin splints. I think it's just an overuse issue. I stretched today, and it wasn't nearly as bad.

Yeah it works. No one said it didn't help you shed the pounds.

The argument against Atkins is that it isn't healthy to avoid veggies, fruits, and grains.

If you really want a fad diet that works, try the South Beach diet. It preaches low carbs, but it also encourages you to eat the right fruits and veggies.

Damn, tired today. Got out of work late and I just couldn't finish my run. 4th day in a row, maybe I'm supposed to be tired.

More power to you for going out already tired though. That is the step that many people give in to and then fail because of. Let your mind take over and be Nike about it...Just Do It. Good luck.

Mix up your running. The route, the intensity, intervals, the time spent, all of it. Make it interesting. Make it fun.

roma, are you trying to cycle the carb? it can work as well, but if you are just starting the diet again after coming out of ketosis, it will kick your *** for a few days. your body has to adjust to burning fat and it take s a couple three days to make that switch.

the abs diet is the best "diet" on the market. it is basically every good sound conventional, simple thing you have ever heard.

it is so basic that it is damn near revolutionary, compared to all the other fads out there.

notreally, are you saying my fatigue today was because of my diet switch.

To confirm, yes today was my first day back on low carb I guess. I can't call it Atkins because I'm cutting out fatty meats as well.

I think I am just a little fatigued mentally. I just couldn't really run well today, compared to the past 3 days. I hope it's a normal thing. You always hear about nba teams being tired on back to backs, etc.

Loop, good idea on mixing it up for sure.

You know this but if you can get off the concrete and on a softer surface you will be very happy. Mix the types of cardio too. Do you cycle? Shoot hoops? When I was a trainer a golden rule was to make the workout as fun as possible for the client. There are so many different things to do that it is easy to make it fun and therefore easier to stick with and actually look forward too.

If you start slipping or getting bored, chime in and we'll get you through that.

that is correct roma. the atkins diet is based on ketosis. it takes 2-3 days before your body will make an efficient switch from using fat instead of carbs for fuel. once you are in ketosis a few carbs won't knock you out of it, but too many will.

but my point is that you should feel fatiqued. you took away your body's energy source, and it doesn't know what to use. you'll feel just fine in a couple of days.

Those of you that drink sodas would be amazed at the change your body has with moderate exercise and absence of soda. Don't even drink the diet ones. Don't sub with coffee laden with sugar either. Basically go clear healthy liquids instead of soda.

You may learn you are actually a sucker addict to the soda which may help you kick that addiction. But the changes will be somewhat quick and noticeable. Sodas are teh suck. Their manufacturers could give a **** about you or your health as well as your family. They are not as nefarious as tobacco companies but thye know their product that they charge WAY too much for to begin with, is a very unhealthy item.

Companies like this can bite me.

I can't I am addicted to diet coke. Plus, I would fall asleep on the job.

I still believe in the "eat less, exercise plan," but that is for those with considerably more restraint than me.

Eat better, exercise more! That is easier to do. There are tons of yummy foods to eat that do your body good.

Don't cut the sodas cold turkey. They have too much a grip on your brain and soul. Make it gradual. You may find you are addicted to carbonation as well and a bubbly water with no sodium could do the trick. Working out should get you tired and you should sleep better.

Think of diet sodas as a black mamba. Do you play with black mamba's? I did not thnk so.
