At least he didn't call them Polacks

"US President Barack Obama's description of a Nazi German Holocaust site as a "Polish death camp" shocked Poland, whose leaders insist the record be set straight 67 years after World War II.

Obama on Tuesday labeled the Nazi facility used to process Jews for extermination as a "Polish death camp." The White House later said the president "misspoke" and expressed "regret".

The linguistic faux pas overshadowed Obama's posthumous award of the highest US civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, to Jan Karski, a former Polish underground officer who provided early eyewitness accounts of Nazi Germany's genocide of European Jews.

Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Wednesday Obama's words had hurt all Poles and he expected more from Washington than just "regret".The Link

Who was it who said " words matter"?

think what would have happened if Bush said it? It would have hurt our image in Europe and maybe elsewhere

I thought this guy was some master speaker of the English language, he is lawyer after all and should strong command of vocabulary, I wonder what his college grades were?

shiner
I forgot about that one.

MWA
do you think he can blame it on the TOTUS
is that who blamed when he said he didn't soeak ' austrian"?

That is a big screw-up. The victims in the death camps were primarily Polish, but the camps were obviously German.

Poland has been one of our most loyal allies since the fall of communism. We should be as favorable to them as we reasonably can be. (They were even smart enough not to adopt the Euro.)

here is the rest of what Prime minister Tusk said "The White House will apologize for this outrageous mistake,” Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski wrote on his Twitter Inc. account. “It’s a shame that such a momentous ceremony has been overshadowed by ignorance and incompetence.”

It is also interesting that has of 10 am CDT today the WH has not corrected the text of that speech.
I think eventually BO himself will have to make a statement. having a spokesperson won't be enough.

I think it is representative of this administration and very little regard for others. An attitude of I am better then you so what I say really doesn't matter you should just be thankful I said anything about you at all.

The Polish government, in a spirit of full disclosure should own up to the fact that during the war a lot of poles helped kill jews and turned them in.

Blaming it all on the Germans is easy and they certainly deserve the major blame for the atrocities but we should quit engaging the nonsense that it was just the Germans. Poles killed jews, French killed jews and Ukrainians killed jews, mostly with German help, but there had been vicious pogroms in Poland long before Hitler raised his hideous profile.

Maybe the president should say "I apologize for referring to the Nazi German abbatoirs as Polish; I should have said that the jew killing in the camps was mostly by Germans but that a lot of the jews in the camps were there as a result of the enthusiastic anti semitism that had been tolerated in Poland for centuries."

It is the truth but I doubt it would pacify the Poles, who want to continue to see themselves only as victims.

^^ What you said is 100% correct. However, Poles don't want to be seen as the bad guys and want to distance themselves from Nazis. So despite what has happened in the past and quite frankly continues today (ie there are very few jews living in Poland today for a reason), Obama ****** up.

Why wouldn't BO apologize? he is the one who said it.
The hack spokesperson who issued the " regret' didn't say it, BO did.
I had forgotten BO shut down the oplans Bush and Poland had made for a missile radar system pr facility( or what ever it was) to be jointly bult in Poland.
Bo shut it diwn and didn't tell Poland. They read it in the news.

This ignorant remark by BO didn't help any their viw of Us any. and maybe they are nothing to care about their opinion.
Still BO should personally apologize.

Obama has degrees from two Ivy League schools and, so, he cannot perceive of himself as ignorant and incompetent; rather, he sees himself as the best and the brightest of his generation of Americans, just as the previous generations of Ivy League meritocrats did as they led us into Viet Nam and Iraq and before that as they cleverly overthrew the elected government of Iran and installed that popular fellow the Shah.

And so on.

And if I may pat myself on the shoulder, I declined to vote for the Chicago Pied Piper four years ago because I thought he was ill prepared for the job and didn't know it.

My standard default position now is to not vote for anybody with an Ivy League degree. I know there are exceptions like George H.W. Bush but as a default setting, I think it works pretty good and recommend it to everybody. It will allow you not to vote for either of those two arrogant pathological jerks in November.

I don't think you can blame either columbia or Harvard for BO being so stupid in this instance .

Perhaps you can make a connection between the schools and his elitest attitude that prevents him from apologizing to an allyfor such an insulting and erroneous remark.

what about service academy grads?
2 were awful ( Grant and carter, with Carter being one of the worst) and Ike being decent.

how would you rank harvard grad POTUSes John Adams and johnQ. Teddy and FDR/

I think it is ALL on the man. and I think BO is failing once again by not apologizing personally.

I'll take a stab; John Adams peaked when he married. After that it was a series of screwups. He was in charge at the time of the worst civil liberties abuses in history. His kid was an arrogant ahole who made a slick deal to win his election and then got his clock cleaned in the next ellection.

Teddy was so arrogant his feet rarely touched the ground and was the father of modern progressivism, as in hey, we will all be better off if we let the government involved here.

FDR had no idea what he was doing besides experimenting. He tried everything at one time or another and a lot of them worked. Some didn't at all and some ran out of stream later, which he can't be blamed for.

We left out JFK!!!

All mouth and swinging dick and he almost blundered into one war and did blunder into a second.

His hero worshipping boy's state aprentice, Bill Clinton, walked in and not knowing what he was doing appointed his IVy wife to run health care reform. You will recall how that worked out. Meanwhile, the arrogant policy wonk was sticking cigars up the vagina of a moron and almost got kicked out by a pack of bloodsuckers led by Newt Gingrich. He was arrogant but not ignorant and is still prancing around like he is god's annointed.

Dont let Mcbrett hear you talk about iyy leagures this way!!

I dont think you can fault all Ivy league grads but there is a pattern. I have worked very closely with 3 Harvard MBAs and 1 Harvard Law grad. 2 of them were absolutely worthless in the real world. They could theorize their asses off and had jargon that sounded damned impressive but they literally couldnt pick up a phone and talk to somone or solve a simple problem. 1 was so so and basically just lacked ambition. 1 was the best business person I have ever been around. Tellingly, the good one started his own business and worked his *** off and learned about real life.

Huis
I don't know if you have anything with the never vote for an Eastern elite
but i have to admit i dealt with 2 Harvard MBA's who were the among the most clueless people I have known. At the same time I was dealing with a UTSA Grad who so out distanced the 2 Harvard grads in analysis and common sense it wasn't close. I think they each knew how poorly prepared they were. BUT they could BS so they had that going for them

I've worked around several of them over the years and a few were disasters but most were reasonably competent or even above average. But they were all convinced that they were the cream at the top of the bucket.

One other thing: they network worse than our aggie brethren, are clannish to an extreme and, like them, don't find anything untoward in the practice.

I just read BO sent a letter of regret to the Polish President.
Good for BO
It was the right thing to do and better late than never
