Astros?

I see their record this season is abysmal. Do they have any fans left? Are they building for the future? I've been a Rangers fans since they moved to Arlington. They've mostly been bad over the years, but we could always look the farm system, the draft, new ownership, a big trade, a new stadium, a free agent signing, somthing to give us hope. Anything like that going on in Houston?

I'm pretty sure they have a new owner, but I know nothing about him including his name. It seems to me that they are in a really bad spot. I don't see any young players who could be superstars in the next couple of years. Hunter Pence is a solid player but not someone you want to build a team around. They need a new GM who isn't afraid to trade off everyone he can to bring in some young talent. When watching their games I haven't felt like they have hardly any talent on the team. And surely they don't have a good farm system or those guys would be in the big leagues right now with the state of the MLB team. So I think the Astros are in very bad shape.

Top to bottom, their roster is the weakest in baseball. Hence the record.

I'd like to say they have a young team, but it's not. A lot of their vets are basically minor league journeymen that had to get called up out of necessity.

Their pitching staff would still be mediocre even with good position players. None of their starters have an impressive WHIP, and the bullpen is downright scary.

The only thing keeping them from losing 130 games is the fact that they're in the NL Central.

I think they're kind of in Dallas Stars limbo right now... they can't spend money because of all their issues, so they can't compete as a result. It'll be a while before they even get to "build for the future" mode.

It's the only team that has their total roster on the trading block.

Hook'em!!!

Thanks for the info Joe Fan. With money coming in and a new owner, looks like there is hope for the future.

Ranger fans remind me of Aggy. One good season and suddenly you're the freakin' Yankees. Yet, you don't want to compare franchise histories and track records with too many baseball teams. Whoop goes the Ranger fan.

I resemble that remark.

One would have to admit that the trends for Rangers and Astros are going in opposite directions.

Phillies are treating the Astros like a farm team.

Drayton and his staff of buffoons can't get out of the front office fast enough either. The Pence trade has nothing to do with my opinion on that though.

Hmmm, The Saint, that's exactly what we've been saying about Astro fans for years. There was plenty of chest-thumping in 2004 and shortly thereafter, but what have you done lately?

I live in Corpus and see a lot of the minor leaguers and two have impressed me the most---Pence and Altuve, who was only here for a bit but made an impression.

He is very short but still hits with some power and has a great eye.

The new outfielder, Martinez, is also pretty good.

Halfway through the season my feeling was that if those bozos with the money had spent some of it on a decent bullpen instead of all those $400k a year guys that this might be a decent team. They have lost a lot of leads late this year and a lot of one run games.

AS for the trades, I hated to see Bourne and Pence go but am happy for them. Hope they got something in return.

What did the Astros get for Joe Morgan?

Lee May and Tommy Helms

Stros also included Cesar Geronimo, Jack Billingham, Dennis Menke, and Ed Armbrister.

Another intelligent Houston trade.....

Now 1B Wallace and 3B Johnson have been sent back to the minors. This franchise is in shambles. I hope the new owner knows what he is getting into.

I've been an Astros fan since the days of Mike Scott and Nolan Ryan in those hideous rainbow jerseys.

If I were the new owner, I would beg Hunsicker to come back and rebuild the farm system. Ed Wade has turned out to be a super failure.

I hate to see Hunter Pence and Bourn go but when you're on pace to lose 110 games, everyone is expendable. I wish Carlos Lee waived his no trade clause so we could get something for him. What I don't understand is why he would want to stay with a team that has won only 36 games through August.

Yeah, I'm still a fan and the good news is it doesn't get any worse than this. I think both trades loading up on arms is a good move. Time will tell.

I've been a Stros fan since before they were the Stros, being a "charter" fan of the Colt .45s. Had the good fortune to go to the first game in the Dome (exhibition game against the Yankees with Mickey Mantle). According to life expectancy tables, I've got 20.3 more years. Can the Stros turn it around in that amount of time? I doubt it...so I think I'm gonna start on Lipitor to get a little extra time.

True fans stay with their team through the bad years, as I have done with my Rangers through most of their history -- yes, my team has sucked much more often than not. But now I am being richly rewarded for my devotion and loyalty, as I watch my team make great trades and position itself for a lengthy run at the top of the standings. One of the, if not the, best farm systems in baseball, a fantastic scouting department, great inroads in the Caribbean, a youthful general manager who knows what he is doing, and most of all, an owner who has "walked the walk" and has the respect of everyone associated with baseball.

I have tremendous respect for Astros fans who don't jump ship now that the going has gotten tough. It's bound to get better for you guys once the new owner takes the reins.

And for the record, I knew Drayton would be bad for baseball.

And as someone said above, at least you're not a Dodger fan. What a fiasco that is over there in Chavez Ravine!

I still remeber going to the "new" Astrodome and hearing "coldest foam in the dome" from the beer vendors. No offense to any Rangers fans, but your childhood shapes your loyalties and I will never be a Rangers fan. The lost opportunity with Ryan and Hunsiker is so unfortunate. Why did McClane buy a baseball team? What did he think he and his people knew about baseball that Nolan f'ing Ryan didn't know? It's like buying the Patriots and firing The Hoodie.

The Astos may have been en vogue in south and east Texas, but never in DFW. And where I live, there are plenty of Astros "fans" that never cared a whit before Drayton bought 'em. They thumped their chests plenty in '04.

They're wearing Rangers gear now.

And I was called "aggy" first. So there.
