Assistant Coaches

While this year was certainly disappointing, and Barnes' coaching of this team lacked considerably, I think he has done far to much for this program to be fired this offseason. I think he can be the coach to lead us to the promise land, but he needs to show next year that he is still leading Texas in that direction.

Instead of firing Barnes, I think we should look at bringing in some new assistant coaches. I don't want to get rid of all of our current staff, but brining in some new ideas (meaning probably not another former player of Barnes) could be very helpful (similar to what Robinson and McDuff, Chizik and then Muschamp did for the Mack and the football team).

But I don't know who the top assistants out there are. Unlike in football, where some coordinators are known just as well as their head coach, basketball staffs are all about the head man. So, I ask, who are the top assistants we could bring in to improve our basketball staff, and our basketball team?

Thanks, and Hook'em!

That is not the way it works in College Basketball. The assistant really are just a mouth piece for the coach. Head Coach is everything in basketball.

Barnes is now a liablility

That might be true.

But I'm not sure why Barnes is choosing former reserves like Paulino and Ogden as asst. coaches?
Also, loosing asst. coaches from the past couple of years has hurt us IMO.

Ken McDonald and Frank Haith were great assistant coaches for Barnes. He still hasn't recovered. Really his staff is a bunch of guys who doesn't really help Barnes, but guys that need to be helped by Barnes.

Rick is wearing too many hats and lifting too much weight and doesn't have enough help. He may be too stubborn to admit that and make changes, though.

Ok, so generally, the TX. assistant coaches pull weight. Can we just add someone? It seems there are some assts. out there that could undoubtedly use a jump in pay scale - compared to their current gigs - I would assume they'd be doing so by coming to the 40. Maybe it's time Terry or Springmann move on to a HC gig and we bring in some fresh perspective.

Chris Walker, Villanova - Phil Cunningham, MSSt. - Steve Masiello, L'Ville, to name a few, all strike me as guys that could do better by coming to Texas.

I agree with bringing in new blood with new ideas, however, DO NOT bring in former players for that role, IMO. I think Barnes needs to explore bringing in an offensive guru Xs & Os type of guy. Someone who can change the scheme to match the players on hand. Also, bring someone who can teach shooting techniques and decisions - Good teams shoot around 50% FGs; Barnes' teams shoot around 45% or worse. Last nights team shot 37% and only 27% from its leaders (James/Bradley).

I say move Ogden to a figurehead position and bring in a guy who can be the assistant head coach and run the offense and be in charge of strategy for Rick. Terry and Springman are good recruiters and can stay to do that.

It would be nice to get someone from the staff at Syracuse and another assistant who has a proven track record of working with big men.

When your strength and conditioning coach knows more about basketball and the team (and is by far the most respected coach on the team) then I would say you have a problem. Todd Wright is at least tied with Muschamp as my favorite coach on campus, but he shouldn't have to be carrying this much weight on his back because the other assistant coaches only know how to recruit.

Paulino and Ogden both basically have as much basketball knowledge as Barnes gave them, so they are really not going to be of much help.

Ok, I'm going to take a stab at this. I don't think any of the assistant coaches need to go, nor do I think they do a bad job. We had a bad collection of talent. Period. Barnes didn't do a good job, but when you look at our team what says that they should be a lot better than 24-10?

WIth all of that said, if Terry was to get the UH job I would like to see Chris Walker from Villinova take his place. He was at New Mexico last year and is responsible for all of the TX players on their roster. He does a great job recruiting Houston and has no ties to the program, so he would bring in fresh ideas.

Springmann is unbelievable as an assistant coach. He is not just a good recruiter. He isn't going anywhere.

Ogden is good also. He is becoming a good recruiter (responsible for Avery Bradley), and is really good with the players. He isn't going anywhere and he will get better with time.

Paulino is the Director of Basketball Operations. You don't count on him being much of an assistant. It's almost like a grad assistant position.

So, the only one that could be replaced is Terry and that's only if he gets a Head Coaching job. He is a great recruiter so he won't be leaving under any other circumstances so it's really not worth talking about.

Yeah, the Statesman (link) said that Springman is interviewing for the HC at UNC-Charlotte and Terry is interviewing for the HC at Houston. If one or both leaves, there will be an opening for a top assistant position. Someone at that level will have more of an impact than adding/replacing an assistant at the Ogden and Paulino level. It would be great to bring in some fresh ideas from outside of the Barnes coaching family, a la what bringing in Robinson, Chizik, Muschamp et al. did for the football team's defense after stagnating under Reese. A coach who knows how to teach free throw shooting and post offense/defense would be nice also.

Didn't mean he wasn't going anywhere if HE chose to do so. I just meant he wasn't going to be let go.
