Sounds like Coach Hughey is a rising star ... perfect for Texas. He doesn't appear to have any Texas connections though, so that doesn't change UT's position with respects to in-state recruiting.
Hope the chemistry is there for the staff and players. I'm sure it is.
I don't like this hire because he has no Texas connections and that is what we desperately need.
Being positive- it will help having DeMoss gone though because there were too many chiefs and not enough Indians- with two former head coaches on staff. The other former head coach beside DeMoss is Carol Ross- who may not officially be on staff- but is at every practice offering her opinion.
If he is as solid a recruiter as his bio indicates, he will have no trouble establishing relationships with the high school coaches. And, he already has an in with those coaches in Florida and surrounding areas, another big area for players.
I like the hire. But, as he said, everything's bigger and better in Texas, including expectations. Now, significatn improvement in the post play will be expected as well as landing top post players. This, even though he will not be able to coach the players until school starts this August per NCAA rules.
I do hope he's here for a while. He will need the time to make a difference.
I'm one who wanted a strong Texas connection and I'm disappointed that the hire doesn't have it. That said, I think this has the potential to be a good hire, but like Babhorn, I hope he stays a while - his resume does not profess longevity at any one place. We need a robo-recruiter - and he may just fit the ticket. Let's hope so!
So do you think he saw the ad and applied or did Coach G seek him out? I'm just wondering. This hire threw me for a loop.
The first thing that came to mind was all CVS preaches is defense, defense defense and he obviously didn't like it so he left which I understand but Coach G is defensive minded as well. So did he jump out of the frying pan into the fire? I don't know.
If he turns AG into an offensive threat and teaches AG and CK how to work around the basket...I'm good. We need these two to DOMINATE in the paint at all times. I really think they just need someone to work with them. They have the size and glimpses of excellence but they need someone to teach them.
Texas recruiting - I still say Edwina Brown and then a part of me says Tiffany Jackson. I know - Cynt what are u smokin'? but name recognition will pull them to the 40 acres. Hire her as a contract employee/consultant if you will during her off season to scout and build relationships. She's still young and her father was "the man". The young ladies can relate to her.
I'm grasping at straws but we know we need someone w/ TX connections. Jackson as a consultant following and maybe sometimes leading coach Hughes to the right spots. That's all I'm saying.
I doubt if he left Rutgers because he didn't like defense. That school has players and coaches leaving. I'm sure he got a sizable raise and the opportunity to recruit in a talent rich area, otherwise known as Texas.
if he can help get Nneka to sign a LOI he will have done a lot this season. I have the impression that there are a lot of Texas exes coaching HS. That should help open doors and the rest will be up to the recruiters. Certainly by now, Texas HS coaches have a pretty good idea of who Coach G is and how comfortable they are with her program.
You have to admire his determination in getting his degree. It seems like he puts in a lot of effort into his work. It will be interesting to see how he fits into the group. I would think everyone vetted him before he was offered the job and feel that they can work well with him.
While I'm sure he is looking at a head coaching job in the future, I hope he is here for at least 3-4 years to establish his ability to coach posts and recruit. His work with Ashley, Cokie and Anne Marie is going to be important to demonstrate his ability improve posts that are thinking of coming here.
