Are there any places that carry artisan cheeses in Houston/Clear Lake? I know that Whole Foods and Central Market have them and Spec's has some as well. WF/CM is way overpriced and Spec's quality isn't all that good.

if they're the only ones that carry it, hard to call WF/CM "overpriced".

agree on Spec's quality, not really the best.

The dining blog in the Chronicle has had a few cheese mentions lately. Take a look around here and see if you find anything useful:The Link

Edit: note that a lot of her recent posts about cheese were from Italy, but there were also a couple that discussed local products as well.

I go to the T'Afia market on Saturday morning. There are some great Texas cheesemakers there each week. I buy cheese there every time I go, and it really is fantastic.

I second the farmers market suggestion. There's one on Saturdays at Onion Creek in the Heights and on Tuesday evenings at Christ the King in the Village The Link

There's the MIdtown farmers market at T'afia (Travis @ Alabama): The Link

Finally, there is the Central City Co-Op farmers market at 2115 Taft in Montrose. The Link

I don't know about "artisan", but Costco has an impressive cheese selection--to go with their wine selection. Biggest wine retailer in the country.
