I have just cleared about an acre behind my home. As the ground slants downward, I am having to build up some level platforms for sitting areas and such.
And since I am decadent to the core, one thing I am considering - as an adjunct to my home brewery - is to install an artificial putting green in the back yard. A place to hang out, drink swill, have putting bets with drunk buds and so on.
I have heard that some of the new types of greens are very realistic, and can even accept pitch shots. I know they are also expensive if professionally installed, but I am interested in how much it would cost to get the material and put it in myself. Preferably from an inexpensive source.
So if any one is familiar with these greens, a few questions:
1. Do they actually act like real grass in any way to make putting and chipping an acceptable experience?
2. Are they possible to self-install?
and 3. Is there any place to order the parts without going bankrupt? Or what should I expect to pay for a basic self-installed green that is 10'x15' or thereabouts?
I have friends that do a lot of stone walkway installations and could easily trade some homebrew for their expertise and assistance.
I am really digging the possibilities, but don't want to pay a stupid amount. If I could get by spending $500-700 bills and put a lot of sweat equity to get a green that I could putt and hit 20 yard sand wedges into without bouncing like a driveway, I would in a heartbeat.
