Conventional wisdom has always judged defensive success in terms of yards allowed.

That's why most would think Texas is struggling. The Longhorns rank 103rd nationally in pass defense and 58th in total defense.

Suzanne Halliburton of the Austin American-Statesman discusses how new Texas coordinator Will Muschamp is moderating some of his previous beliefs and looking at new statistics to judge his defense's success.

"People are going to throw the ball and get yards," Texas coach Mack Brown told the Stateman. "A 300-yard passing game is nothing anymore, and that's what we're seeing."

Muschamp now looks at statistics like yards per pass attempt, quarterback hurries and defensive third-down conversion percentage as better judgments of how a defense is playing in today's game.

Texas will be facing even greater challenges in upcoming games. The Longhorns will face four of the top 10 quarterbacks in passing efficiency during the rest of the season with games against Texas Tech's Graham Harrell, Missouri's Chase Daniel, Oklahoma's Sam Bradford and Kansas' Todd Reesing.

So young Texas safeties Blake Gideon and Earl Thomas better grow up quickly, because it will get much tougher for Texas as the season progresses.

Even as Texas tops the Big 12 and ranks 11th nationally in the most important defensive statistic of all -- points allowed.

Then here is a very good article about the defensive stats of Texas

That article scares me and makes me feel good at the same time. Here's to hoping OU and Mizzou can't break our bendy defense.

I've always thought one of the more important defensive stats is scoring defense. If you are keeping people out of the endzone you are probably winning games no matter how many yards you are giving up. That is an area where Texas has been pretty good this year.
