Article re: Impact of Relationships on Weight Gain

I have always suspected that there is a link. When I was married, I found myself getting heavier and not caring as much about being fit. I didn't get really heavy or anything, but my fitness level declined.

Its direspectful when a spouse gains a lot of weight after getting married. Thankfully, my wife shares ths same point of view.

If a person lacks the discipline to stay healthy and fit, odds are they are going to lack that discipline elsewhere, whether it be finances, kids, etc.

I gain weight when I read/study too much. Ticks me off because I continually pick at food when I am reading. Whether it is carrots or candy, I don't really care. Whatever is easiest. Luckily I have a high metabolism and exercise regularly.

i'd be curious to see the differences between married women who give birth v. married women who don't. i'm sure the married women who start having kids really jack up the weight gain number if they have trouble taking off those pounds.

I don't think weight or health has **** to do with being wealthy. I know a ton of fat *** rich men and women. I know more fat people who are rich than skinny/healthy folks.

agreed, i know tons of affluent fatties. you are undermining your theory when you use extremes like "absurdly wealthy". not even sure how you define that.

i know that i gained about 25 lbs on my first marriage and about 15 after my girlfriend and i became serious (and eventually moved in together).

who knows why? it could be because i didn't think i needed to try as hard because i found a long term mate. it could also be because now i eat meals (especially dinner) in a different manner than when i was single. now it is an affair each night to cook dinner and eat around the table etc. i can say for sure that i eat more at dinner now than i did when i was single. there is also something to be said for the fact that people get into these type of relationships more as they grow older and i am pretty sure it is common knowledge that we put on weight as we get older.... for a multitude of reasons.

I won't dispute that there are exceptions to the rule, but off the top of your head - how many absurdly wealthy obese people do you know? How many fit, healthy impoverished people do you kow? Yes, I am making sweeping generalizations, but I would say that its more accurate than not.

I know plenty of wealthy fat people in the oil industry and a few that are obese, but the far majority are fit. i certainly do not know anyone in the oil industry with a obese wife.

i would say that spending a lot of time in the South, a much higher majority of fat people are poor. we have the fattest poor population in the world. actually, i think we have the only fat poor population in the world.

I wonder what the order of the states would be in combined human weight. Could Texas pass California for number 1? Mississippi would move up 5 or 6 spaces higher than it is by population rank.

I've heard a girl say flat out, "I can't wait to get married so I can get fat."

That's one way to get scratched off my list of potentials.

I think as a general rule, you're just more sedentary once you get in a long term relationship. I know that now, rather than going out, me and my girlfriend are more likely staying home and watching a movie. Although, both of us work out, so we've never gained much weight.

Also, where-as when I was single, I may have woken up and gone to play a round of golf or out to the lake for skiing, now I'm taking my 2 girls to the park or swiming. Both are healthy activities, but the former is going to burn more calories.
