Article: Colorado still remembers 70-3

I remember that watching that (B12 championship) game on TV. It was the final door to bust down before Texas played for the National Championship, and it was sweet vindication against Colorado for losing the Big 12 championship to them a few years earlier with Simms/Applewhite.

"Colorado Still Remembers 70-3"

Not really. From the article: There are only a handful of Buffs, nine to be exact, left on the roster who played that season. Two CU assistant coaches, Darian Hagan and Cabral also were involved.

Maybe their fans do, but most of their players have no idea.

Do yourselves a favor, skip the article, and just go down to the article comments. Some are rah rah, but most of the commenters are COMPLETELY hopeless for this week.

Sad.

The writer had to search for a player of twenty years ago to say what he wanted to write about- Texas "clowned" CU and was mean to their QB." Would have been nice to mention what the score was at the end of the third quarter.

I hope we beat them 70-3 again. F CU and their "years of scandalous innuendo and allegations that plagued his program without much proof behind them." (Yea, not much proof. Aggie level denial).

Crush Colorado. We ain't W.Va.

Oh, Geez. Talk about trying to dig up a story.

Yes, the loss was embarrassing. And, yes, I'm sure the Horn players with the game well in hand were celebrating the conference championship and ticket into the national championship game.

But, give me a break. It's D1 football. It's the conference championship. If you can't get up for that, tough. Truth is, we shut it down with 5 minutes left in the 3rd quarter up 70-3. From that point on, we simply handed off to Melton straight up the middle.

If they were smart, they would have done the same. Instead, they were passing from their own end zone. I'm not saying that Killebrew didn't deserve the PF for the late hit. And, it was unfortunate that Klatz got the concussion. But, if you're gonna be passing in obvious passing situations, you can blame our guys for blitzing.

A lot of whining. How many points did Texas score in the 4th quarter? If you don't want your starting QB to get hit, take him out or don't throw. Hagan acts like Texas was supposed to stand around and let them score. F him.

I just read the article and all I can say is WOW!!!

I guess they forgot Mack started pumping the brakes in the 1st half!

We didn't score in the entire 4th quarter - do you think that was because Colorado finally figured out how to stop the Texas offense or because Mack didn't want to embarrass Colorado more than they embarrassed themselves...

If Mack hadn't pull the reigns in we could have scored 100 points.... easy!!!

So do I. And I still love it.

What I remember about that game was for weeks we had put it on cruise control and were playing to not get anyone hurt. I remember VY stepping out of bounds on a run against BU and thinking he could have turned that into a bigger gain, I bet he has specific instructions to play it safe.

Then the CCG and the coaches turned them loose and unleashed the full power of that team. We could have 70-3'd several other teams that year.

That colorado team was so bad at the end of the year that our scout team would've put 40 on them. The embarassing thing was that there was no better alternative from the north that year.

That is one game that I'm absolutely 100% positive we could have scored 100 points if we wanted to. We had 70 with 8 min. left in the 3rd. Complete domination

If my team was on the wrong end of 70-3, I'd still remember it, too. (In fact, despite my best efforts I still clearly remember 66-3).

In addition to 66-3, I still remember the as whipping we took against Miami in the Cotton Bowl.

That Big 12 game was memorable to me due to the lack of fans that CU had. There were maybe 500 Buff fans there.

Amen, I remember one of our guys had a another clear block on a punt from the CU endzone and he just stopped to let them get the kick away. You know, if you are going to keep throwing you can't expect the defense to not put a rush on you. Perhaps Colorectus should have simply run the ball to keep the clock moving.

Young threw a 17 yard pass on Texas's first play in the third quarter. Nordgren threw a 3 yard pass on 3rd and 8 late in the quarter. Texas threw one pass in the fourth quarter, on a 3rd and 12 play.

Texas's last three touchdowns were scored by recovering a blocked punt in the end zone and after two short "drives" after recovering CU fumbles at the 26 and 16.

Even the second quarter explosion was more than partly CU's fault-throwing an interception to give Texas the ball at the CU 31 (one play--touchdown), holding on kickoff return, three and out, short punt giving Texas the ball in CU territory again.

Yeah, they got embarrassed that game, all right, but what was UT supposed to do? Immediately fumble back? Punt on first down inside the CU 30?

When a team "remembers" a beating like that, it may not be helpful as motivation to win the next meeting. Instead, it may jack with their heads to think, here comes the team that killed us 70-3. Now they're scared.

Either way, so what.

I double-checked. It was Kelson not Killibrew. Sorry for the stereo-typing of Kill as a PF machine.

But, as I said, CU was passing the ball from the endzone, late in the game. Hard to tell our guys not to rush the passer.

Me too. And I remember a poster giving hornfans the code to their box office so that we were able to get 40 yd line seats 18 rows up on the Colorado side. I remeber that side was mostly orange. Thanks again to whomever posted that code.
