We already discussed Barbeque...but what about

Hamburger's - Cliff's and Otto's
Mexican - there are tons...I haven't found any that stand out above the others
Italian - Palazzo's (Relatively Inexpensive), ??? on expensive places
South American - Foga de Chao, Americas
Steaks - Scott Chen, Cafe Annie, Pappas Bros., Sullivan's
Breakfast - Fountainview Cafe - damn good shakes also
Atmosphere - Scott Chen's
Sport's Bar - Nick's Place (I watched the the UT/Oregon Holiday Bowl there and it was packed and about two minutes before Ike returned the kickoff back for a TD, Nick (the owner) said he'd by the house a round if UT scored another touchdown - needless to say there was a fair amount of excitement in the bar during the return, not to mention the Horns were back in the game), also SRO is pretty good for a huge place
Bars - Sam's Place and Sam's Boat - so many strip joints, so many strippers

Just some random thoughts...also looking for suggestions of places to go

Steaks - I'd rate Capital Grille No. 1, although there are a few really good places
Churrasco's is great food, but doesn't have the atmoshpere of Americas
Vallone's is good American cuisine
Ruggles is, IMO, the best restaurant for the $$ in the city.

Re: Italian, I'm not a big Italian food eater so I don't know the really nice ones, but for a good meal the Grotto is good and there is a chain place called something Buca, I don't know its off 59 and Buffalo Spdwy. I've been there once, its pretty good, kind of a loud atmoshpere.

Crostini's is awesome as well off Sheppard I believe and then try Simposio. I can't remember exactly were it is, but it is pretty damn good Italian with some different cuisine. The lamp chops were absolutely amazing!!

I'll second Fogo de Chao for South American food. That place is freaking awesome, just make sure you haven't eaten in about four days before you go.

Italian - Riva's (off westheimer and montrose0

Pizza - Star Pizza on Shepherd north of Memorial

Burger - Nobody beats Hut's

Mexican Brunch - Jalapeno's - Kirby and Westheimer

Breakfast - Buffalo Grill (Bissonet and Weslayan)

Almost forgot..... No chain should ever be included in a post like this. I distinguish a chain as having locations in more than one city. Chuy's is a chain. Trudy's is not. Pappas is a chain because the run about 30 other restaurants (mexican, seafood, etc)

That is the most confusing definition of a chain I've ever heard.

You all must try El Rey--at the corner of Shepard and Washington.

Hamburgers: Beck's (its kinda a chain, but damn good burgrer) Best location: memorial park.
Mexican: Spanish Flower (breakfast); Fiesta en Guadalajara or Picos.
Italian: Damians (expensive); Mia Bella (cheap)
South American: Churrascos; FOGO DE CHAO.
Steaks: Papas Bros.
BBQ: Goode Company....still city Bar B Q but it is pretty good.
Sports Bar: SRO.
Gentlemen's Club: Treasures.
Seafood: Tony Mandola's on West Gray.
Golf Course: Black Course or Houstonian
Muni: Memorial (good luck with a tee time) or try Sharpstown
Margaritas: Club No Minor or El tiempo.....food sucks though.
Pizza: I'll take La Vista.....
Dance Club: Blanco's cheap beer....

Best Mexican food for my dollar is Tacqueria Cancun.

I don't know the #'s, but I think #9 in the ghetto at Long/(Gun) Point and Witte.

Misha-Rodizio's is on Westheimer and close to Fountain View.

Try Hickory Hollow on Heights bet. Washington and I-10. Good chicken fried steak, burgers, bbq, etc.

Petronella's (not Brother's Patronella in downtown)--this place is on Jackson Hill and Washington close to the Heights. Great Italian restaurant run by a family.

Mack-Is Otilla's the one that looks kinda like a drive-in?

If so, then yes. They are pretty good. I had a nice chicken fajita there.

They make their chicken different that most places. The chicken is very tender, and it's chopped to very little shreds.

If you are looking for a good sports bar in Houston, make sure you go to Texadelphia! It's the BEST and they LOVE the horns!! Get the chicken cheese steak sandwich, its the bomb!
Hook 'em!
(also...when the games not on tv, go to texadelphia and they have it there!!)

HoustonNole--yeah that's the one. Their chicken is good, I agree. Sounds like you live on the near westside. You ever go to La Vista on Fountainview @ San Felipe? That is really good.

MAck-I live near Voss, just south of I-10. I usually hang out around the Westheimer area, but surprisingly I haven't been to La Vista.

I usually eat Chacho's on Westheimer because it's the only place open late nights.

What part of town are you in?

Texadelphia's good. They always have hot girls there. The waitresses are decent looking too.

The best place for cheese steaks though is Jake's Philly Steaks on Chimney Rock, just south of Westheimer.

Great potato salad.

HoustoNole--Chacho's rocks. I used to live at Westheimer & Chimney Rock, but I recently moved to the Heights. You should give La Vista a try. It's BYOB, but there is a liquor store right next to it. Its right by the Rice Epicurean on Fountainview.

Also Cafe Lili right by the James Coney Island at Westheimer & Bering is reallly good. They have really good shish kabobs. The beef tenderloin they use is very tender and marinated just right.

Mack-I used to eat at that James Coney Island on Westheimer and Bering every day during the summers.

What's funny is one of the manger guys there is named Frank. No joke. I go there so often, that he remembers my orders.

The best pizza in town is Star Pizza. They a couple locations, I think they are both near the Heights.

Fuzzy's is great. A friend of mine who went to school with me at Memorial HS owns the Fuzzy's chains. Well, his uncle or someone does. But he works at the Fuzzy's on Fondren. He attends UT right now.

Italian - Da Marco (on Westheimer between Dunlavy and Montrose). My wife and I ate their for our anniversary just to try something new. Unfreakingbelievable!! However, it is not a typical Italian restaurant dominated by pastas, tomato sauce, and cheese. It is kinda pricey too.

Another great meal can be had at Mark's (about a block down from Da Marco). I guess you would call it continental. Delicious, great service and $$.

Mexican - I have to give it to Irma's next to Enron field. But I think it is only open for lunch.

Best pizza is at Colinas.

Best mexican is El Tiempo.

Best burger is now Pappas burgers, where Wings n More used to be on Westheimer. Maybe Pete's fine meats.

Actually, the best pizza in TEXAS is Antonio's Flying Pizza on Hillcroft. Nothing comes remotely close. Best Chinese is Orient Express or its sister location, Hunan (next to America's) in what was the Saks Pavillion on Post Oak.
