Arkie St. 07 vs. FAU 08

That's Right

I would say that FAU 08 is better than ASU 07 and that UT 07 (at least in game 1 with a healthy Limas, Tony, etc.) was better than UT 08. So.... What are the chances we see a repeat of last year's opener?

Slim. For four reasons:

4. We're not coming off of a weaksauce bowl game like last year (Alamo Bowl)
3. The Horns have a lot more to prove with all the doubters and haters saying we're going to suck this season.
2. Major Applewhite.
1. Will Muschamp.

Major won't be quaterbacking though and I like Colt well enough. He is a year more experienced. A year more of leadership.

I don't agree that UT 07 was better than UT 08. Each team will have different strengths. UT 07 had strength at RB, TE, and WR on offense, DT, DE on defense. There were obvious injuries at WR that allows us to really bring back more at WR and be deeper this year. UT 08 is still an unknown commodity but you would think going in they will be better at QB, possibly WR, OL, DE, LB. DB's are about even and could be better this year. Many think RB will be a step down but again that is a bit of an unknown at this point.

Team seems more focused thru spring and summer this year. Not big incidents and no players will be suspended or missing practice due to suspensions. I think the team's focus will help prevent the close games we saw early on last year.

"What are the chances we see a repeat of last year's opener?"

Zero

Texas has a very green o-line last year that kept Texas from controlling the game early in the year. That isn't the case this year.

I would have to take a different view then most here.

I think this team will struggle early. I can see a close game against FAU and UTEP...then hit our stride against Arkie.

I think this team is extremely young, and lacks playmakers on offense.
The D is young in the secondary and this FAU team is no joke.

We will need to prepare hard for them and expect a fight.

I think the wild cards in this year's noncon games against FAU and Arkansas are the opposing coaches. Howard Schnellenberger is a nutjob who will probably have his athletic (if less talented) team sky high for the game, and Bobby Petrino is a very good coach, even if he does seem to have the ethical development of your average snake. I worry about FAU more than Arkansas (or Arkansas State) simply because they have the athleticism to match us.

Remember at the end of their bowl game last year Schnellberger announced that the building program was over and that FAU was going to Texas and would return with a win (paraphased). I guess that he doesn't remember the last time he came down here (in 94 with LVille) and getting pelted with plastic cups.

It never ceases to amaze me how some of our fans just can't imagine us losing a game like this.

If we play anything like we did last year against piggy lite we could lose BAD.

FAU isn't going to come in here empty handed ... they have some talented players.

Having said that we SHOULD win this game ... but we SHOULD have killed piggy lite, KSU and aggy last year too.

FAU scares me because of how effectively and frequently they air it out, and how poorly we defended against that last year before we lost everyone. I don't think they will be able to stop us on offense, but I don't think we will be able to stop them either. In the end I think we win the shootout.

I don't think FAU is a gimme and I am a tad nervous based on our defensive performance last year.

But I still feel good about opening day, a new, fiery, agressive defensive coordinator, and the debut of our kick *** north endzone. I think the crowd energy and hunger of our team will carry the day.

The closeness of the Arkansas State game came as a surprise to everyone. Now, having already seen such a game once, Texas will be better prepared for it and, if it occurs, will weather the situation much better than last year.
