Are we recruiting more out of state prospects?

I was just checking some of the info and it seems to me that we are focusing on a larger number of out of state prospects than we normally do.

For those who have followed things in the past more closely would you confirm or deny this thought please.

We are clearly showing more interest in OOS prospects. It may be true there are more OOS guys interested in Texas, but we are making more offers and visiting more OOS campuses than we have in the past. Mutual interest is important of course, but many fans have been disappointed that high caliber interested OOS prospects in the past were not ever pursued by our staff. Mack is evolving his strategy with his new staff. Hopefully we bring in a few OOS guys for the '09 class.

Mack doesn't visit OOS prospects at their HS or during their games whereas every other coach does.
I would bet as long as that practice is in place your continue to get the same amount of elite OOS prospects as you normally

I don't know where you get the notion that most coaches “visit” out-of-state players during their games. First, the obvious: given that high school football games are played on Friday and Saturday nights, college coaches are more concerned about their own teams' games at that point. I highly doubt any coach of a major college program is wandering around some other state on a recruiting trip when his team has a game the next day (or the same day). Secondly, the NCAA doesn’t allow Division I coaches to have in-person, off-campus contact with a recruit between September 1 and Thanksgiving. They are only allowed to visit with recruits on the university’s campus. They get six days during that period for “off-campus activities” related to evaluating a player’s academic and athletic abilities, but they are not permitted to meet with a player in person, even on one of those six days. So unless you’re suggesting that Mack Brown is the only coach in the country who is not guilty of major recruiting violations, then you really need to bone up on your understanding of NCAA regulations.

college coaches travel to Friday night games all the time.
Several top college coaches can be seen in the stands when an elite player is playing & those coaches are recruiting him or someone else on that team or the other one as well.
Happens all the time.
You do realize most coaches have excess to a private jet don't you?
If you have a subscription to recruiting sites you'll see where coach X went to see player X Friday/ Saturday night before/after their own game & coach X from another schools was there too.
You might not be privy to this information because your coach doesn't do it but, the other coaches from big-time programs do it all the time.
Oh, and yeah, college head coaches visit HS all the time. It's one of the main reason's they get to land that player.
Mack is one if not the only coach that doesn't ever meet an OOS player at his school or watch one of his games in person.
That's a huge reason why Texas never lands the elite OOS player.

ok, access. I was in the middle of typing a dissertation for the State Legislature.

My bad.

btw: I take back 92.4% of all the good things I said to you in my PM a while back.

Don't you mean Tie ping a desert nation?

Hey, it's all good. I'm just giving you some grief, and hoping to add another unique entry to the Hornfans lexicon.

In reply to B'47..."attending" a game, does not mean meeting a recruit "in-person". If he never talks to the recruit, he has done nothing more than scout.
In reply to Since'73...I too, find it hard to believe ANY of the MAIN coaches would travel to another state, when they have to finalize a game plan for the next day. Seems to me, the head coach, DC, and OC, would be busy. Possibly the position coaches may watch a game, but that is all I can see.

I'm glad we have a commitment from the no. 7 guy from Ark at a need position. But, he grew in Texas and Mack apparently didn't know about him till his HS coach sent video to him. We have a top 10 program and do almost jack to recruit out of state. LAZY or ARROGANT ?? I do not understand why we don't have 3 to 5 top OOS guys sign every year.

it's laziness. It's pathetic that top national recruits have to contact Texas before Mack decides to go after them.

Pride - it's something Oklahoma knows nothing about.

I wouldn't give a **** if our entire roster was comprised of TEXAS kids.

per Rivals we have signed exactly one OOS football player in the last seven years. hard to believe. Why would we pass on the rest of the nation?

I loved the Nat'l Championship, but during that time we only won one conference championship.

How much better could we have done with 3 or 4 top one hundred starters from OOS. Can some one tell me why we don't recruit OOS??

You got me, I missed one or maybe two, but Studdard and Sendlein were eight years ago, and they were past players kids!!

One or two more stud players per year, think Ricky would make a difference.

Everyone has this all wrong. All we need to do is keep Texas kids in Texas. Look at the out of state coaches that recruit Texas.

Unfortunately for Texas is that academics enters into the picture.

Well, since we can't keep all the best guys in state, maybe we should be more realistic and recruit selectively OOS. Or maybe we can follow the Yellow Brick Road and find the good witch.
