Are we contenders already?

It's early in the season, but the season is looking crazy already. ODU, whom we beat by 30+ just beat Virginia who beat Tennessee at TBA. I know its a game of match-ups, but I am beginning to suspect that we are better than I thought and perhaps better than our ranking. Is this a sweet sixteen team, an elite eight team . . . ? That number 1 ranked recruiting class of 2005 - now that they are all healthy may live up to its billing after all. Or am I getting ahead of myself?

WOW!! I have a warm, cozy feeling about our team right now. BabHorn was right in an earlier post (different thread) about our guards. Coach G's substitutions with them are right on target. I think they're going to be able to out-hustle, out-play, and out-last any team we're going to face. I'm loving it!!

I can't wait for the home game against Tennessee...I've been trying to recruit all of my "non-basketball fan" friends to at least show up for this one.

Our win over ODU was very impressive, IMO.

I think our upcoming game against Georgia Tech on a neutral court will be very telling. The Yellow Jackets put on a phenomenal performance at UConn recently, despite losing. This will be our first game away from home against a quality opponent.
 
If (big IF) the ladies play every game like they played Furman today, I can't see a loss. Defense was tremendous!!

ODU was the best chance so far at seeing what we are made of this year. What I like about this team so far - and I have been to all the games thus far - is that we don't seem to have a "B" team. It seems no matter what 5 are on the floor we play well. Although we have fewer players than I would like to see on the bench, not a one of them seems to be the weak link. It seems to be a team full of varying degrees of better... And man are they quick. I would still like to see a little more ball control at times but this team is solid. If we are not a contender this year there is no question that next year we'll be the team to beat. But I am getting ahead of myself as the season has just begun. Hook 'Em!
 
One can see the work they have put in during the offseason on conditioning. They are able to run and play in your face D when in. Then the next wave comes in.

All the players appear confident about taking the open shot and more importantly, they are hitting them. I don't know how far the team will go this year but there is noticeable improvement from last year.

Are we contenders yet? I would have to say yes. And getting better.
