Are the GOP Candidates Embarrassing?

Charles Krauthammer thinks so and I agree:

The Link

quote:"It is, and I don't think it can be explained by anything that the president has done in a positive way," syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer said about President Obama's rising approving ratings. "I think it's explicable by two things. The first is the ridiculous way that the Republicans have conducted themselves in the Congress, particularly in the last couple weeks where they were given a victory early on, and they kicked it away and achieved really nothing in terms of cutting spending or any of their real objectives, but suffered politically, making Obama look like at least a grown-up.

"And second, I think, is a year-long, almost year-long exposure now to a weak Republican field. The fact that Santorum is the last standing alternative. Think of how this has gone. Trump, Bachmann, Perry, then Cain, then Newt, who is really in decline now, Ron Paul, who is on the ascent, but he's not electable, and now Santorum. Every single alternative is going to get a try or looks as if it's going to get a try because the field is unhappy with, or the electorate in large part is unhappy with Romney. He's stable, he's sober, but he's considered ideologically suspect.

"Imagine if you'd had a race with a Mitch Daniels, with a Paul Ryan, Christie, Jindal and others, Sen. Thune. It would have had a completely different complexion. And I think with some of the sort of embarrassing candidates like Cain and others along the way, it has made the president who is by who he is, presidential, look better. And I think that explains the reason his numbers are up. He's been a passive observer to this. And

Newt finally jumped the shark with his tease about Palin as his running mate. Bachman, Cain?...please.

In the end, it will be Romney-Rubio and this "embarrassment" will be out of everyone's mind. The general election will be one massive negative shitfest coming down to an early evening win for Romney. It will be effectively over before the returns come in from Ohio.

What I think is funny is how splintered the GOP is now. You have a guy like Newt who has been a face of the GOP in the past now distancing himself from the party. I heard his radio ad the other day and it said that the republican establishment is looking to pick their candidate. He throws in his accomplishments in the 90s when there was a democrate in the WH. I find this absolutely hilarious.

Charles Krauthamer did not think much of Ronald Reagan in his time either. So, he wiffed on the most successful president of the 20th Century. Just saying.

He loved Reagan. What are you talking about?

Krauthammer first gained attention in the mid-1980s when he first used the phrase "Reagan Doctrine" in his Time magazine column.[17] The phrase was a reference to the American foreign policy of supporting anti-communist insurgencies around the globe (most notably Nicaragua, Angola and Afghanistan) as a response to the Brezhnev Doctrine and reflected a U.S. foreign policy that went beyond containment of the Soviet Union to rollback of recent Soviet influence in the Third World. The policy, which was strongly supported by Heritage Foundation foreign policy analysts and other conservatives, was ultimately embraced by Reagan's senior national security and foreign policy officials. Krauthammer's description of it as the "Reagan Doctrine" has since endured

Perhaps you prefer another conservative opinion of the GOP candidates:
The Link

"Rather than answering the call for a credible right-of-centre, pro-business party to provide independents, including this newspaper, with a choice in November, it is saddling its candidate with a set of ideas that are cranky, extreme and backward-looking."

"These fatwas explain the rum list of candidates: you either have to be an unelectable extremist who genuinely believes all this, or a dissembler prepared to tie yourself in ever more elaborate knots (the flexible Mr Romney)."

It is pretty clear to everyone that this field sucks. And the main point of both Krauthammer and The Economist is that the good candidates won't run because conservatism has been hijacked by the extreme base.

Agzona, because they can't appeal to extreme base of the party. Mitch Daniels would have been a shoe-in, but he's too "moderate".

So in an effort to get the "most conservative" candidate we are going to be left with another four years of Obama

Speechless much?

I am rather shocked. That said, my point is the Krauthammer missed on Reagan BEFORE he was elected President. Heck he worked for Fritz Mondale in the early 80's. Therefore he may very well be missing on a very strong candidate right now.

The forest appears to be unsettling for you so you seem content to focus on the trees. The GOP candidate pool has become an object of derision and scorn even among staunch conservatives.

I generally like Krauthammer's points of view. That said, I'm reminded that he was one of the distinguished conservatives who visited Obama right after he was elected and came away all starring eyed and impressed with his aura.

So his ability to size up talent is bit suspect.

the pool of gop candidates as a whole are a joke but the same can be said of a democratic party election. what kind of successful conservative businessman would want to put his family or himself through the media meat grinder of a presidential campaign? we will never see a real normal intelligent person run for president of the united states.

Sorry, but the auroa of the Office does not impress me, the POTUS is just another American, who was elected to be a leader, that is it, he holds no special powers or mystical value.

Now if they could levitate or had the power of a Jedi, then I might be impressed.

The star struck crap that goes on with Hollywood stars, athletes and now politico's is beyond recognition for me.

I remember bumping into Barry Goldwater at a Safeway in Scottsdale one time and he said sorry for me bumping into him. He kept going and so did I thinking that has to be one of
the most awkward moments in my life.

These people are human and nothing more, to think they are anything special makes for a very sad existence.
