are FT woes the flu of the month?

Interesting thread on the MBB forum...also discussing the piss-poor FT shooting by the men's team. Seems to be a growing problem...

I just fail to see WHY this team has fallen apart at the line. While the defensive collapse against ISU was certainly nearing epic proportions, it is also a game that NEVER would have GOTTEN to OT had the team shot better than 69%. We aren't even that high on the season...stat page shows Texas at a lowly 68% on the season. Barely two out of three simply does NOT get the job done. At that low a level, that says our scholarship athletes are basically shooting about as well as an average fan would be capable of doing from the charity stripe.

While I would certainly like us to do a better job from the line, the 69% we shot during the ISU game is equal to or better than season avgs for a majority of Big12 squads.

We are near the bottom of the Big12 but a lot of teams seem to have the same problem this season. The seven squads shooting under 70% thus far:

KU - .695
NU - .690
TT - .689
AM - .683
OU - .681
UT - .680
MU - .647

It looks like there are going to be a lot of close contests this season and agree that hitting more FTs is crucial.

I hope that the team has taken heed of the woes on the mens side of the season...once again, it was demonstrated that a team NEEDS to be able to shoot free throws in order to win consistently in the Big 12.

Interestingly enough, the mens board is beginning to read like this one has in the past...posters being sick of seeing the same problems repeated time and again without meaningful resolution. The talent is there for both squads, but it stagnates.

WE MUST MAKE OUR FREE THROWS!!!

I'd say 75% to 80%....

I would hope that teams shoot for at least 75% although most teams seem to be just south of 70%. I understand that there are many factors that go into making FTs, including fatigue and being keyed up from play.

Watch BU's Tweety Carter shooting FTs like he did yesterday. Deep breathe to relax, same routine, four FTs in a row when they were needed to help pull out the win. It seems to me that most players just don't take the time to collect themselves before shooting. Or they are thinking about past poor results instead of focusing on the current chance.

Okay, done with that.
