Got one as a gift a few months ago. It's pretty sweet but I don't know that I would have bought one (and I'm a Mac guy). We've got it hooked up to the bedroom system & it's pretty slick to be able to stream our iTunes library to the small sound system we have in the room. All in all it's a pretty decent piece of equipment.
I'd like to know how easy or hard it is to put movies on it from DVDs. I've heard that some Blueray DVDs can be imported onto it, but I don't know if the person giving me this information knew what they were walking about. Can you import any Blue Ray DVD, or just DVDs that have the computer file included (ala Forgetting Sarah Marshal). If you need the file, then I'm assuming that for 99% of the DVDs out there you'll have to rip the movie, correct?
And, if this is the case how hard is it to rip DVDs onto it? I hate asking the question because I know that it's technically illegal, but I'm thinking of getting one and would like it to have all the DVDs we currently own on it and not have to buy them off itunes (similar to how you can import CDs into iTunes, I'd like to "import" our DVDs).
Handbrake is your friend when it comes to putting DVDs into iTunes for your AppleTV. Works great for DVDs, but I haven't tried BR. You can also get a TV Tuner for your server and use it along with TitanTV to record off the air and drop the recordings into iTunes so you can access them from the AppleTV. If you have a Mac server, the EyeTVs from Elgato work great for a tuner including HD.
