Probably a DRM chip (mandated by the movie studios) that they just started including in iPods. I doubt it's some tin-foil hat conspiracy.

Not really apple related but regarding getting stuff via torrents. I recently used a program called vuze which is basically a flash skin wrapped over Azureus torrent program. It is a weird mix of pirated and legit dowloads lumped in to different categories and some are listed as channels.

one of the channels was Showtime. I clicked on it and then the Weeds channel. you could download the 1st episode for free, but then the others showed that they could be bought for $1.99 each.

Granted it is a terrible idea for anyone using torrents for pirated material to give name, address, cc # to go with the IP address you are using, BUT, something like this seems to be a step in the right direction.
