Of course there's a catch. It requires a lot of electicity. If we can find a way to make the electricity cheaper AND greener (i.e. solar or wind that's cheaper than coal or nuclear), then we're golden. We can all burn gas in our tanks with ZERO net carbon impact. We'll be burning stuff that came from the air in the first place.
Los Alamos says the stuff is economically viable at $4.60/gallon. With technological improvements they see that number coming down to $3.40/gallon.
They are talking about using nuclear to get around the emissions issue. Apparently even is so scared of global warming now that the creation and storage of spent uranium isn't an issue. I predict we're going to see really cheap solar in 10-20-30 years and the problem will be solved.
Maybe we can just cover all of Oklahoma with a giant solar array.
