Saw this one last night.
Tombstone lovers (I am not one) beware. This is not an action-packed, one-liner western.
It's a little slow. There aren't really that many fight scenes, and the ones that do happen happen fast. I found that fairly realistic. I like Ed Harris. Viggo Mortenson does a good job alongside him. I particularly liked his 8-guage scattergun.
Jeremy Irons makes for a decent villain.
I really don't like scrunched up faced Renee Zellweger. Generally speaking, she whips me. However, she did a good job with this role. It's an interesting role, too. There was some good conversation about her between Mortenson and his girl, and that added depth to the movie although maybe it spelled everything out too much.
I like westerns. I like the time and place that good westerns take me to, and this one was a pretty good one. This is NOT a shoot-em-up, and high flying violence lovers will not like this movie one bit, I am afraid. All in all this is sort of a "B" or "C" attempt to create a McRae/Call type relationship between Harris and Mortenson. They are both really good actors, but the script in this one doesn't help them get to that level (I'm not sure that level is even attainable in a two-hour movie, if at all).
I'd give this one a B.
