Apartment Renting

I'm looking for a new apartment to move into (Austin), and I've heard that you can get better prices than the listed ones. Does anyone have experience with how to do this? I'm looking to move sometime this summer.

When you say better than listed, do you mean better than the prices you see listed online or in the apartment finder magazines? If so, then it's easy to get better prices. They refer to those advertised rates as the market rates, but then we you visit a complex they'll give you a month or two for free. They just spend this free rent over the term of the lease, making your actual rent lower. There's no trick to getting these prices, anyone should be able to explain this when you go to look at apartments. If this isn't what you're referring to, then someone else may need to dish out the insider info.

The advantage for you using a locator is that we have the information about which properties have what specials, have availability for specific time frames, will accept certain kinds of pets, will work with specific credit/criminal problems, etc. that everybody else just doesn't have. People waste so much of their time going to property after property, visiting places that won't even be able to fit their particular situation. I hear it from people all the time that they have been looking on their own for days or even weeks, haven't found what they wanted, so they decided to get some help from a professional and came to our office. And since the service is free, it's a win-win situation for them.

thanks, all helpful posts/information. the reply about one or two months rent for free, and how that affectively lowers rent throughout the term of the contract is spot on what i was asking about. awesome.
