I have a big green egg smoker and it seems to keep the temp pretty stable, but some days it is heck trying to initially zero in on the right temp to set up a long (18+) cook.

These seem like a good idea, but i wonder if they work as advertised.

There is another one that will connect to your network and runs off of software on your computer.

I don't have one, but talked to several people at last year's Texas Eggfest that are very happy with theirs. I'm considering getting the Stoker so I can run both of my eggs off of it. Plus, I like the idea of being able to throw some ribs on at lunch and then remotely monitoring them from the office so that they're done when I get home.

using the stoker (network based) would you have to be running a program like PC Anywhere from work to actually monitor the temps?

When reading that site stoker system , it seemed like the temps were only available on your internal home network.

Also the link works OK for me, but it is just 'thebbqguru.com' if you want to copy paste.

I copied the statement below from their website:

"Integrated web-server. Plug the Stoker into your network and monitor and control your cooker from anywhere you have Internet access."

That's what makes me think I can kick back from the office and monitor a cook at home. Maybe I'm wrong.

My wife bought me the bbq guru competitor for christmas a couple of years ago. Its incredible. I use it with my big green egg. Its great for smoking brisket. I typically throw one on overnight so its ready the next afternoon. Even though the BGE can hold a temperature steady overnight, there were still times when the fire would die down and I'd have to get up in the middle of the night to check it out. Now, I never have to worry about it at all. Its never failed. I can smoke a brisket up to 18 hours, if need be, with one batch of lump and never have to worry about the temp. Great purchase that I'd highly recommend.

FYI, the one I use also has a "ramp" mode. I.E. you put a themometer probe inside the smoker to moniter pit temperature. You can also stick a probe in your meat and select a desired temperature for the meat. As the meat temperature gets close to the desired temp, the guru will slowly drop the temperature of the pit until it hits the meat temp.
