Anyone staying in Santa Ana?

I'm flying into Santa Ana for the game and was wondering if anyone knows where (or where not) to stay in the Santa Ana area.

Thanks.

I'm staying there at the Doubletree. There used to be a cool place there called the CrazyHorse Steak House. Not sure if it is still around.

Crazy Horse was a legandary music venue. The old one along the 55 freeway was razed. It has moved to the Irvine Spectrum.

As to the "where to stay" question, there is a ton of stuff within 5 mi radius of the airport. How much do you want to spend? You want motel 6 or Hyatt?

You are flying into SNA, but it's not "really" Santa Ana. The airport borders Irvine, Newport Beach, and a tiny tip of south Santa Ana, and is a stone's throw from Costa Mesa.

Santa Ana is a heavily immigrant (hispanic) city. It does have a substantial business center (it's the Orange County Seat), but you don't want to stay there. The only "safe" bet is the "South Coast Metro" area, which also includes a part of Costa Mesa. This area is near the South Coast Plaza shopping mall. The Link There are a lot of nice hotels there.

Just about anything in Newport Beach or Irvine will be OK at a minimum, and likely quite nice.

I live in the area, so I've got a pretty good idea what's what. If you find a particular hotel and want an opinion, let me know. Otherwise, give me an idea of what level of accommodations, and what you want nearby, and I will be happy to make recommendations.

BigWill, thanks a lot! This is exactly the kind of information I need. I don't know the area at all, so it's good to get some insight from a Local. If I have other questions, I will let you know.

Thanks again.

You can use any of a number of online reservations sites to find hotels.

But before booking them, check out their reviews on:

TripAdvisor.com

TripAdvisor.com is the best source I know to avoid bad hotels.

Pericles, thanks for the advice. I was on hotwire.com last night and got the Doubletree Club Orange County for $52 per night. I forgot about tripadvisor.com but when I went there this morning after reading your post, it's the #3 hotel (out of 25) tripadvisor recommends. I feel good about it. I was shooting for economy, and I don't think I could stay at the College Station Ramada for $52 a night.

We are flying to the the Orange County airport and considering the following:
Staying near the Airport since those hotels provide free shuttle service. Also, looking at taking the amtrak from Santa Ana Station to Union Station and then catching the metrolink (sp) to the stop near the rose bowl. Problem is the return trip due to the end time of the game.

This plan is due the fact that students are not old enough to get a rental car.

It sounds like you are not suggesting staying in santa ana ?

Is the amtrak from santa ana to union station a safe option to two 20 yr old males ?

Is the metrolink from union station to rose bowl (memorial stop) safe ?

Thanks for the input.
