Anyone Seen Gordon Lightfoot Recently?

Want to see Gordon Lightfoot at Bass as I have never seen him and always wanted to, but heard throught the grapevine that he can't really sing anymore. Any advice?

I doubt you would regret it. I went and saw one of Burl Ives' last concerts at one of the UT concert halls while a student and have fond memories not so much of the performance, but that I went.

I'm a big fan of Gord, but I just can't bring myself to see him in concert given his condition. I'll probably regret it...some. Not that I idealize the 70's cheese of the male moustache, hair chest and tincture of cigarette-coffee breath, but his music is damned fine if chauvinist. Same for John Denver.

I guess I would be glad I went. I saw fat Elvis about a month before he died and no one would come with me. I went alone and all my friends now wish they had gone.

In '02 Lightfoot suffered an abdominal aortic aneurysm, had a tracheotemy & spent 6 weeks in a coma. He's only performed once or twice since them & given the severity of his condition it would be unwise to to expect Gordo to sound the way you might remember.

Then again, I'm still kicking my *** for not seeing Roy Orbison @ Aquafest in '88. He was dead 4 months later. Like a previous poster said, if you appreciate an artist's work & the opportunity presents itself don't let it pass you by. The notes might not be spot on, but I bet you'll enjoy the experience immensely.

Plus I think it was Bob Dylan who said "when I hear Gordon Lightfoot sing a son I wish it could go on forever."

Actually, Gordon performed 4-5 times in 2004 and then toured in 2005 on the Better Late than Never Tour, when he played about 15 or 20 venues and received good reviews.

His vocals were not as strong as they were in the past but his life experiences and his struggles added a resonance to his singing that wasn't there before ... at least according to most reviewers.

GOTJ...I saw that Orbison performance. Glad I did.

I'm checking out Willie this Sunday at Paramount and Merle in mid March. Last of a breed, for sure.

My father took me to Elvis in the Austin Municipal Auditorium a couple of months before Elvis died. Same story...turned out unexpectedly to be a great memory. "CC Rider!"

Elvis goes on stage

I saw John Denver 3 weeks before he died in his plane crash. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I also saw Jim Croce shortly before he died and the original Lynyrd Skynyrd. I am a harbinger of death.
