Anyone Remember The Reivers (band)

Great local band who used to play Liberty Lunch, Cannibal Club, etc...when Austin still was in fact weird. They are playing this Saturday at The Carousel Club as Right or Happy. Wonder if it will be all new stuff or if they'll mix in some classic oldies?

They were great. I still remember them being Zeitgeist but had to rename because they got sued over the name.

When they reunited a couple of years ago to play two shows at the Parish, both shows sold out...the first on in less than twenty-four hours.

I just bought a couple of their LPs at a local used record shop(Tulsa). Kind of surprised to see them. They had the True Believers and rank and file as well.

Solid band w/ dueling male and female vocalists. NOt my favorite from that era, but it brings back good memories.

Part of what made me think coming to Austin would be okay was was the town's history of weirdo punk. Scratch Acid, the Surfers, Big Boys, Dicks, etc. I even had respect for the True Believers and Rank and File as those bands had the bona fides (Al Escoveda in this thug/noise punk outfit The Nuns, and the Kinman bros from The Dils). I was excited.

First show I went to was at Liberty Lunch -- The Reivers and the Wild Seeds. Jesus **** what a bore. That 'new sincerity' **** made me want to set off a bomb. Truly awful. Thank god Ed Hall, Pocket FishRMen, Miracle Room, The Seemen, and Crust were around or I would have been in really tough shape.

Croslin is a nice guy, though.

buckhorn, dude, your taste in music is excellent. i probably caught the tail end of that era.. mine was more Sixteen Deluxe, Starfish, Bedhead, Wannabes, Sincola, Cherubs, Furry Things, Hormones, Kissoffs, etc.

i don't remember the reivers, but i do remember merv griffin talk-singing his way through a version of the little river band's hit "Reminiscing" on his show one time if that counts...

Yo

Yeah, that stuff was a little bit after the late 80s, which was a little bit after the really good stuff (Big Boys quit in '86, Scratch Acid in '86 or '87, The Surfers hardly ever played after about '86 as they went worldwide, etc.). Hell, in '88 Miracle Room moved to New York after one last show at Club Cairo (Cannibal/Jelly Bar) and the Seemen evaporated at about that time, as well. Liquid Mice were around haltingly for a number of years thereafter.

The Cherubs were awesome and need to play a reunion (Kevin apparently wants to concentrate on his country band). Most of that Trance stuff was good. Starfish were a good band, especially if, as seems to be the case, you are into Husker Du. There was a time when Bob Mould lived here in town. Incidentally, I saw them in '83 in a dank little underground space in Kent, Ohio called JBs Down. Under a biker bar. ********. Anyway, there were a half dozen or so wooden seats on stage from some bygone auditorium and I sat down on one to rest after thrashing about to the opening band (no longer recall who that was). Some guy sits next to me and I yap with him for a while. He then says 'nice talking to you, I got to play now.' Bob Mould. What a magnificent maelstrom. It was like being drowned in melodic static turned up to 11. Metal Circus remains my fave and it was mostly that stuff and earlier **** from Everything Falls Apart.

Austin used to be a weird little outpost. I recall going down to Aransas Pass with the Hickoids and the Pocket FishRMen and sundry bands and hangerson. Slept in the cars on the beach. Met Spot there for the first time (after years of saying to friends 'who is this Spot guy on all these great records). Bonfire through the night with a generator for tunes (the moisture was hell on our equipment and made your fingers sticky so playing was a *****). Hella fun. In the morning Richard, the bass player from the Hickoids, staggered out into the sunlight with a huge, floppy straw hat on and prison black and whites on. Freaks and Geeks body surfing and finishing off the alcohol. The locals on the beach were appalled and kept a noticable distance. Those were some good times.

Make Austin Weird is what the stickers should say. I wasn't here when it was really weird. But it hasn't been at all weird for years and years. That died with the Cavity, in my opinion. Cotton Mather, Happy Family, EMG, Fire Ants, Squat Thrust, Snuggles -- on and on. Nowhere bands with crazy-assed members.

Dino Lee was crazy and one wild show. I remember seeing them play out in back of that stip club on S. Congress. Can't remember the name but I think it is still there. Instead of his Dinoette dancers, he had strippers dancing with the band as they played.
