Anyone doing a non-traditional Thanksgiving?

I went to a vegan Thanksgiving about 3 years ago. I was impressed with how they were able to recreate every traditional dish in a vegan manner. I brought along a meat-eating buddy who just complained the whole time, so we dropped in on a meat gathering afterwards, and he gorged himself.

I used to like the drumsticks on the Turkey, but the way my family cooks the turkey now, those things come out like jerkey... only drier and harder.

For the last 3 years, I have requested that they wrap the drumsticks in foil so that they don't turn to crap. This year, I requested Salmon if they can't do it.

The tired/sick feeling after eating Thanksgiving Dinner isn't something I long for. Entonces, I would be absolutely fine with not having a "traditional Thanksgiving Dinner" for a while.

I am going to my in laws this year, which is probably going to mean some traditional dishes, but a number of Lebanese dishes as well. Maybe kibbe, lu-be, tabuli, stuffed squash, hummus.

I'm not big on turkey. It just makes me tired. I love the stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, but honestly those are just as good with chicken.

This year I'm either smoking fish or duck.

We're doing a non-traditional Thanksgiving, at least for us. We're going to my parent's in IL. Only the second time since we've been married and only the third time in the last 10 years

The road goes on forever, eh...

After skipping turkey with the sister I can't stand, we'll have venison tamales with a cranberry/orange compote. We'll then come back to town and pick up our almost free turkey and have it next weekend

Best non-traditional to me is cooking a 7 pound rib eye roast, PSA $5.99/lb at Randall's right now....

Plus we have a super good recipie that helps with the timing of stragler guests, and the sister or brother that is ALWAYS late...

we do a non traditional every year with my parents and i love it. the menu this year goes like this...
fish fry- (uncle is a fishing guide in west bay)
on the smoker--ribeyes, marinated whole chikens, BBQ shrimp, brisket
all the fixens and pie you can handle

Funny, I was going to start a similar thread since we won't be doing turkey this year.

We're using Thanksgiving as a sort of dress rehearsal for my in-laws' 40th anniversary next month (we're making the meal for 15). It will just be the two of us plus 2-3 bachelor friends w/ family out of state. They will be getting smoked prime rib (well, technically it's 'choice' rib, aka boneless rib roast) w/ a Texas-style dry rub (not too bold, just a bit of sweet). Mrs. Ghost has a green bean casserole recipe & some ranch-style (not from a mix) mashed potatoes she's going to make. Plus I'm going to bake an apple cranberry pie for dessert.

I'm really looking forward to it. It will give us a chance to test & tweak our recipes before the reunion in late December, plus it will mean we'll only spend a couple of hours cooking on Thursday instead of the better part of the day. More time for me to work my way through a case of Sam Adam's Winter Brewmaster's Collection (Old Fezziwig....mmmmmmmm).

Work is going to prevent me from being home on the day itself, but I'll be home for the weekend. On Thanksgiving Day, I'm getting together with a friend in the same position for grilled NY strips, au gratin potatoes, Brussels sprouts, a good Cab, and 7+ hours of football.

I usually host a dinner for friends around Thanksgiving - this year (yesterday) I made ginger-soy glazed cornish game hens, wasabi mashed potatoes, yam tempura, and stir fried green beans with garlic, soy sauce and honey.
