I think I'm gonna go during Texas/ou weekend. Any advice on how we can make it economical (reasonably speaking)? I should probably buy the ticket now, one would think? Travelocity? Southwest?

Also, best way to get a cheap hotel?

I use kayak.com to find hotels and cheap airfare. It searches all the major travel sites.

I haven't been to Vegas for OU weekend but I suspect it will be like most weekends in the fall, unless there is a convention in town. Right now you can get some good deals because of the price of gas and the shape of the economy. I was there over the 4th of July and it really didn't seem that crowded for a three day weekend.

I assume the airlines will rate their flight based on current gas prices. If you think prices will drop between now and then, esp. when the summer travel season is over, I would wait. You can always book a month out and save money.

I think it is worth the gamble. If the gas prices stay the same or go up slightly, the cost reduction to entice travellers would maybe make the price the same as it is now so you lose nothing.

southwest is not basing their fares on current fuel prices, due to their futures contract thing they did back when crude was $40/barrel.

I also use kayak, but then I check to see how much it would be if I bought direct from the airline... sometimes you get better deals... www.southwestvacations.com has really good package deals to Vegas all the time... check that out.

I was in Vegas for the 05 game and got so pissed because they switched coverage like after the third quarter becuase we were kicking their *** so bad, but thats what I wanted to see! I was wearing my burnt orange all day and saw a few others but nothing crazy.

July 4th is never a busy weekend, so I wouldn't base much on it being quiet during that period. With the economic situation the way it is Vegas will probably slower than most years, but I'd guess it'll still have plenty of football fans filling the seats in the sports book.

Anyway for hotels look for a good rate at some place like the Venetian. They are hurting right now. You might also be able to find an ok rate at a decent second/third tier hotel like Treasure Island, Planet Hollywood, or the Mirage.

As for watching the game, get their early to try and get a seat. You can also get watch it at ESPN Zone. I watched the Rose Bowl there, and it was a decent enough place to catch a game. One thing to watch out for is what other games will be on at that time. If any of them are better OR they feature USC or some other cali team expect that game to be the featured game over TX/OU.

Vegas is starting to hurt and their rates are beginning to fall, so you should be able to get some decent deals.

There will be 26,000 new hotel rooms, mostly upper end, coming on line in the next two or three years along the Strip. That will be interesting to see what it does to everybody's rates.

i've been there for tx/ou weekend. didn't notice anything different. why would you pick that weekend of any to go?

I bet it would be fun, but if I've got money for Vegas, I damn sure have money for Dallas.

fwiw, if you plan to watch the game at a decent sportsbook, plan to get there by 8:30am Vegas time at the latest. College football Saturdays are always crowded. We typically are in our seats by 8am with a few Bloody Mary's already down.

Thanks for the tips.

As for why that weekend? Why not? Poker and watching the Horns tool the sooners. Can't be beat.

^
^ it can be beat by going to dallas, drinking wax cup beer and watching the game.

I went to Dallas every year when ou pounded us. Poker is a helluva equalizer, plus my buddy isn't a huge sports fan.

sorry, i'm not a big fan of vegas. the more i go there the more i loath it (forced to go gamble, drink all day and night for work). can think of better places to be for TX/ou weekend, namely Dallas.

So circus circus is way cheaper than most places, is there a reason? The Excalibur is as well, I think they're under renovation. Is there a way to A) figure out if a hotel is under renovation (or if that's a big deal) and B) if you book a room for 3 adults, would you get three beds?

CircusCircus is a big dump on the north end of the Strip (crappy location). It is overrun with kids & strollers. It's buffet is the worst on the Strip.

If you want a cheap, but decent motel-like place in a great location, try the tiny Casino Royale. It's Days Inn-type rooms have been renovated recently and it is across the street from the Mirage and is sandwiched between the Venetian & Imperial Palace/ Harrah's. Cheap gambling there too, but it's in the middle of everything that's cool at mid-Strip.....meaning easy walking distance.

Of course you could stay off-Strip at a decent place like the Orleans ($133/night Friday & Saturday) or the South Point ($120/nite Friday & Saturday) for the OU weekend. The Southpoint is fairly new & has pretty nice rooms w/flatscreen TVs. Both the Orleans runs free shuttles to the Strip (the South Point's goes to Mandalay Bay, and the Orleans' goes to mid Strip - I think to the old Barbary Coast (now Bill's).

I highly recommend Bill's Gambling Hall & Saloon (the old Barbary Coast) for OU weekend it's showing $150/nite Friday & Saturday. The rooms were renovated several years ago - it's one of the best locations (Flamingo & the Strip) - across from Caesars, Bellagio, Bally's & Paris - and is a small old school casino. The Victorian Room 24/7 coffee shop is pretty decent, with an emphasis on oriental food.

Or you could stay way south on the Strip at the South Point for $120/nite - it's a fairly new place with nice rooms & big casino - they run a free shuttle up to Mandalay Bay.

Or you could book the Orleans @ $133/nite a decent place with large casino & free shuttle to mid Strip (I think to Bill's).

All those prices are pretty good for a weekend in the fall. Most of the higher end hotels there are asking double or triple those rates I quoted for Oct. 10 & 11.

Of course you can always go the Priceline or Hotwire route to try for cheaper rates.

If you book a hotel early, go back & check to see if the rates have changed for the better (I suspect that will happen this fall)...then re-book at a lower rate.

Good luck - and remind the Vegas locals about OU suckage.

Thanks for doing my legwork, lol. I think we're set on staying on the strip. I'm booking through Southwest or travelocity I think.

We always reserve rooms with 1 king bed. Dunno what the ratio is of king beds to two double beds in Vegas.

Most of them have rollaway beds available.
