We went recently for lunch on Sunday. It is a new restaurant out by the Salt Lick west of 1826 (maybe 3 miles from Salt Lick on FM 150). It is on a winery (Mandola Estate winery).
It was very good although I liked my meal better than my wife's. But great atmosphere.
Here's what I wrote about this place on another thread:
"I took my wife there for her birthday last week. Beautiful setting, lots of outdoor seating that will be great once the evenings get cooler.
Small wine list. Their wines are on par with most Texas wines, which is to say they're OK but not great wines.
Food is solid but not spectacular. Much like Mandola's in the Triangle, the food is good but the menu is pretty basic and not an adventurous Italian menu. Fairly inexpensive. Two glasses of wine, an antipasto platter, three entrees and two coffees were $75 including tip.
My wife and I went there a couple of weeks ago on a Friday night. We arrived at 6:15 and waited almost an hour to be seated. The grounds and the main restaurant are beautiful, though, and a glass of wine made the time pass just fine.
Their food is good, and very reasonably priced. We ordered a salad, 2 pasta entrees, a bottle of wine, an espresso and a dessert, and our total was $68, including tip. We asked to be seated on the patio, and saw a very nice sunset while we were eating. Afterwards, we did a quick self-tour of the winemaking operations, which pretty much consisted of a walk through the building, looking into a bunch of locked rooms that feature big windows. Clearly, they are proud of their operation, and should be.
I think it's a terrific "destination" restaurant. Our only complaint was with my wife's after-dinner coffee. The first cup was barely luke-warm, and the replacement cup had a lot of grounds in it. They didn't charge us for it, which of course is to be expected, but they didn't offer any other comps, either. I wasn't put out by that, although it seemed a little odd. Frankly, the service seemed to be their weakest link overall, but again, it wasn't anything that soured our experience.
Hi, Sorry to hear about your coffee. We have a new barista working on the weekends who makes wonderful coffee drinks, and a new manager from Pesce, a top-end seafood restaurant in Houston. So please come back this fall and winter for another try
Went last night. I enjoyed it but couldn't help but imagine how much better it is to visit during months when the sun stays out a little later. Our waitress described the sunsets and it sounds spectacular. The food was very well prepared. I had the rigatoni with spare rib and sausage meat sauce. It had a little spice kick to it that I wasn't expecting but turned out to be a great enhancement. We shared a bottle of their house Montepulciano and it was definitely among the best Texas wines I have had. The service was attentive but not very knowledgeable. I can't hold that against the restaurant given where it is located. It's probably hard to find experienced wait staff out there especially for a restaurant of that size.
All in all, it was a good experience and I recommend it. I will definitely be making a trip back when the weather turns and the evenings last a little longer.
I need to go eat there. I use to work at the Mandola's at the Triangle part time and enjoyed it alot. Owner's wife was a ***** but hey it was still a fun place to work at. Anyways, I think I'll take the mrs. pretty soon.
