Anybody play rugby?

I'm moving to Austin this summer and am thinking about hooking up with one of the local clubs but I'm not sure which one.

Has anybody played for one or more of them and can tell me which one offers the best combines the rugby and social aspects and perhaps good networking opportunities? Some clubs are known for being a bunch of snobby and cliquish and I'm not too interested in that.

I'm an experienced player, excellent fitness but somewhat undersized.

I visited the websites of the ARFG, Huns and uh,...Lonestars and I'm not quite sure what to make of any of them.

Go to Nasty's on a Thursday night and you can meet a lot of the Huns and see what you think about them. The owner is in the club, unless he's sold the bar like he did Abel's, but I don't think so. I've never thought of any of those guys as snobs, more like Animal House!

I'm from Austin and played in high school and for the Austin Golds for a few year. The Golds is the b-side and the Blacks are the a-side and are very good. The coach is from New Zealand and half the players are from Australia or New Zealand and are all very skilled so it's a good opportunity to learn.

All the guys are pretty cool and I remember they use to hang out at Cain and Ables. Burr Field is the home pitch, they have two fields and a modest clubhouse. You should go out there and check out a game.

There's also an annual rugby tournament at Zilker Park every spring - I think it's in late April. That would be a good place to check out the other teams you mentioned. All I know is the Huns seem to be older (35-45) and the Lonestars are homosexuals...seriously.

PM me if you would like more info, I can probably put you in touch with one of the coaches of the Blacks/Golds.

Thanks for the responses guys.

I gathered that the Lonestars where homosexuals and while I'm as tolerant as you get.....

I did some research and it seems like the ARFC plays at a higher level than the Huns but that's not neccessarily a good thing if its at the cost of intra squad chemistry especially at this level. Burr field is also a bit out, but we'll see.

i looked at websites for Rugby clubs in town a few years ago that were looking for only mildly atheletic Rugby novices like myself for a not-too-terribly serious team, and I came across a couple of the almost-entirely-gay clubs. That by itself wouldn't've been so bad, but what turned me off was that most of them had bios where the answer to "My favorite thing about Rugby is..." was something along the lines of "getting to rub up against all the other boys in the rucks and mauls"

I might see if the Huns will take me for their second XV if I think I can make the time commitment anymore. Is there anyone that'll let you show up for practice about once a month?

In my experience with rugby clubs almost every single one will allow you to do that as long as you are current with your dues. However, the amount of time you committ will definately be reflected in playing time.

speaking of rugby, I wonder if the world of HF can solve a mystery for me. I went to watch the ladies play rugby the other day at the RFC field(s). As one drives down the six miles of tiny dirt road to get back to the field(s), one passes on ones left what looks for all the world to be a golf course. Now, I've played some golf in my time, and I have NO IDEA what course or park or whatever that location is. Anyone know?
